Swollen Cranium IRC?
Would anyone be interested in this? I've started using IRC again on another forum, so I'm always on anyway, and it'd be nice to have here too.
If there's any interest in this, I don't mind writing a tutorial on how to connect to IRC. I'll even start the room and pick a server and stuff.
FYI, IRC stands for "internet relay chat." It's basically a real-time chat client that works better than stuff like the ajax chat on the front page. It is pretty awesome.

EDIT: It may look complicated, but you guys could figure this out in like fifteen minutes, seriously. It's worth the time.

Re: Swollen Cranium IRC?
Haha, I totally forgot that this was not a suggestion forum. Sorry, Cranium, feel free to move this wherever it needs to go.

Re: Swollen Cranium IRC?
IRC is totally 1997...
I only use it for xbox modding nowadays.

Re: Swollen Cranium IRC?
Well, I suppose that Iīll start this when I get back from Mexico, for the few people that would be interested.
Iīd write a tutorial now, but this Spanish keyboard is impossible to use.

Re: Swollen Cranium IRC?
While it may work 'better' than the AJAX box Prick put so much effort into making work, wouldn't it sort of negate the Chat Box that is already here?

Re: Swollen Cranium IRC?
I don't think so. I'm assuming that most of the members that would use the ajax chat wouldn't bother with IRC. I'm willing to bet that it would get just as much use.

Re: Swollen Cranium IRC?
Alright, here's the server info for those who know what they're doing:
Server: irc.xkcd.com
Channel: #swollencranium
For those that don't, here are the (pretty simple) steps that you need to follow. This assumes that the user is on Windows. If you're on linux, you probably know how to do this anyway, and if you're on a mac, all I know is that a good mac client is ircle.
1) Click here to download mIRC. mIRC is just the program that you'll use to connect to the chat.
2) After you download the program, double-click to open it. Click Next->I Agree->Next->Next->Next->Install. After it installs (which should just take a few seconds), check "Run mIRC" and click "Finish."
3) It will open. This is just a trial version, so you'll see a window titled "About mIRC." You'll have to wait a few seconds for a timer. When the "Continue" button is no longer grayed out, click it.
4) Almost there! After you click "Continue," another box will pop up. It will ask for the following information:
a)Full Name
b)e-mail address
c)nickname
d)alternative
My suggestion is to put in a fake full name. Use a fake e-mail address as well. You can use whatever you want for a nickname, and you don't have to worry about filling in the alternative box. I would not use a common word as a nickname, however, as it'll probably be taken.
After you fill in the information, click "OK." If it asks you to download an update, ignore it (click "later").
5) You're finally at the window that you need to be at. Here, type "/server irc.xkcd.com" and press enter. It will connect you to the server, and if all goes well, a new box will pop up.* As soon as it does, type "#swollencranium" without the quotes and click "Join."
You're in! Now you can stay logged in and chat whenever you want. For some basic IRC commands (which you don't need to learn unless you want to) check here.
*If it says that the nickname that you chose is already in use or that the nickname you chose is invalid, close whatever boxes are open other than the server window (the one with the white background). Click on the area where you enter text in the bottom, and type "/nick newnickname" followed by pressing enter. Remember that there can't be spaces in a nickname. Afterward, just type "/join #swollencranium" to join the chat.
That's it. I hope to see some of you there.
EDIT HEY READ THIS
I wrote a script a while ago to monitor IRC chatrooms and show the chat real-time on the net. To watch people chatting:
http://zorachus.net/etc/scirc.php
Keep in mind, you can only watch at that link. To participate, you'll have to follow the instructions above to join the chat.Last edited by dunamis; 08-07-2008 at 08:34 PM. Reason: forgot
