I saw something on TV about that a while back. They seem to place so much emphasis on their career and financial status that they forget how to be people. From a young age, undue pressure is placed upon them to conform to the prototypical Japanese citizen model. Rather than leading their lives as they'd please, they instead opt to do as others think they should. Not exactly conducive to ensuring happiness and avoiding mental anguish.

At least they're getting creative in their means to an end. The latest craze is concocting deadly hydrogen sulfide gas via a combination of household products. That's better than the American emos sitting in a tub and slicing their wrists.

Of course, I would probably off myself too if I looked like them. The eyes alone would be enough to get me to leap from a tall building into a crowded street. Fuckers look like they were repeatedly stung in the eyes by bees.

I agree that committing suicide sucks but to say that the Japanese as a culture are cowards is pure ignorance on your side which is easily acceptable because you have no first hand experience living amongst them.

Committing suicide is in itself an honorable act and you are already familiar with ritual disembowlment known as Seppuku or the deragatory name Harikari (belly slicing).

It is difficult to fathom such acts, even for foreigners living there, as to why a child would jump from her high school building but than again, is it even understandable where you live?

Japan is country that has voluntarily put pressure on its self from ancient times and things tend to change there very slowly if at all. You are expected to meet certain demands that the society as a whole has dictated as being Japanese socially acceptable.

Few things to keep in mind, they have little to zero counseling services:
1. For marital problems because your marriage is expected to work
2. For students because they are expected to pass their exams
3. For bullying incidents (Ijimeru) within schools which are wide spread because those things don't occur.
4. For domestic violence because those things don't occur
5. For alcoholics because there are none

Also, to address financial reasons:

It is not uncommon to seek out the mafia for money and we know what happens when you can't pay back in time, thus, suicide is a way out.

To be in debt or a failure in your finances is to bring dishonor to your entire family. It was not uncommon to read a whole family, with the kids and grandma in the back, driving off the dock, plunging the car into the ocean.

Here's a true story:
I worked in a Contruction company. The Prez set up a dummy company for tax evasion reasons and he was caught and it made the papers. One of the managers, either to show his shame or his loyalty (will never know which one) hanged himself and I really liked him. He was a nice guy.

Whether it's culture or not, honorable or not, I cannot accept the justification of suicide. It's just not for me.
