What the hell
I was just doing my weekly job hunt, yes I have a job but I still look for "the one" that will actually make me proud to do on a daily basis.
So anywho ..
I was looking at what an EMT (paramedic type ) gets paid in the Raleigh, NC, USA area.
A basic EMT ONLY makes 24000/year USD.
What the fuck ?
The dudes that are THE FIRST responder on an accident scene, the ones charged with and responsible for saving MORE lives annually than all the Doctors
and nurses combined has a TAKE HOME pay comparable to a burger flipper.
Any person that has ever been involved in any horrific accident will tell you that its the "first responder" that is the key to life and death, especially in rural areas where it may take 30 -45 minutes to get to an organized care facility.
I've seen guys with fist sized holes blown through their torso SURVIVE because his buddy was trained in basic combat trauma, something the Army has finally started teaching ALL soldiers, not just designated ones.
Your average dude with no med training will just look at a sucking chest wound and say 'damn that must hurt'.
I have more than ten years of hands on experience as a first responder, or as the Army calls it ACLS ( advanced combat life saver).
I know for a fact that having a trained dude nearby makes a difference.
But who the fuck can support a family on 24 grand ? Who the fuck wants to scrape kids off windshields or put their hands in some dude's guts in order to do CPR for ONLY 24 grand ?
This is goddamn appalling .. we pay a motherfucker to install a telephone line 20 dollars per hour (32 with overtime, I know cause I work for AT&T) but the guy that is going to bring me back from dead is paid a pittance.
Fucking retarded man ... retarded.

Re: What the hell ..
Yup, my brother was looking into being a EMT too untill he found out how much they pay. He had a wife and two kids at the time and there was no way he could support them with that shit.
It's total bullshit, they need to just say fuck it and go on strike untill they get better pay or somethin.

Re: What the hell ..
It's not only the low pay you have to deal with, imagine the nightmares you'd have with all the gruesomeness.
I had a friend in L.A. who did this and he used to take photos for his "collection".

Re: What the hell ..
Think about it. 60% of the time EMT's just sit on their asses in their ambulance and eat chilidogs. 30% of the time when they DO get a call... its some 80 yr old with heartburn who thinks that they are having a heart attack. The other 10% of the time is actually WORKING and saving lives. I'd LOVE to have that EASY job.

Re: What the hell ..
Coming from someone who doesn't even have a fucking job, this is about the funniest post you've ever made.
Saying an EMT has an easy job is ridiculous. It takes skill, guts and the ability to keep your wits about you in times of duress. Only a small portion of the population fits that bill. After all the initial training, you still need to constantly keep up to date with new techniques, equipment and standards of practice. It's not as if you take a 3 week course and then spend the rest of your employed life staring into space.
I'd like to see your take on the subject after someone you know required emergency care. An EMT could be the difference between survival and an untimely demise.

Re: What the hell ..
It is NOT an easy job. Where I live, there's a trauma hospital and it's ALWAYS busy. I once sat in the ER for six hours waiting with my mother, and the same EMTs that brought her to the emergency room must have came back like ten times, each with real emergencies. Maybe in a small city, yeah, they don't get that many calls, but in big cities, it's HELL.
And when they have TRUE emergencies, they must act first, think later. YOU have to REALLY know how to work under stress, and really know your shit or else those emergencies arent going to end well.
It is not easy.

Re: What the hell ..
I actually have a problem with EMTs. I think ALL EMTs should be required by law to take an NST course. (Natural Selection Triage) That is, when they arrive on scene and they see some dude with his asshole blown out from a fireworks explosion, or they walk up and a dude has managed to stab himself in the chest....the EMT is required to ask how the accidents happened.
If it appears that the accident was caused by gross negligence (Darwin Award) the EMT must allow this person to expire. In some more extreme cases, it may even be necessary for the EMT to help the death along, or simply apply a scolding and face slap to the victim.
Furthermore, in cases where the victim's survival is a distinct possibility, I'd arm every EMT with a tattoo gun so that we can readily identify these fucking mook-sticks in the future, and give them the wide berth that their fucking incompetence demands.
.....I'd pay them triple their current salaries for that.

Re: What the hell ..
I have to agree with the others ...
The amount of work is dependent on population.
If you work in podunkville then expect to get the old fucker or retard calls.
In Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Durham, some fucker is getting knifed or shot or hit by a car etc. etc... daily.

Re: What the hell ..
That dose suck. My cousin in-law is an ambluance driver, and he make decent money. Nothing great, but more than he would if he was in jersey. He is a HUGE pothead [drives home from work in a lime green VW bus], and that always threw me off. You do have annual drug testing for EMTs right, because that is not the most comforting thought in the world. Having to stop mid way to the hopital to get a burger , and fries.

Re: What the hell ..
Are you suggesting they don't have a basic understanding of triage?
With Pricks analogy (basic paramedic type), is it fair to say that your (US) paramedics don't have that basic understanding of triage?
On topic with the pay statement, I think they should be $100k plus per annum.

Re: What the hell ..
I agree on princeable. However the majority of EMT's are using it as a steping stone to become a doctor. In a way it's a kinda training. Like a pre-internship to boost credintials. My sis-in-law had to do that crap, as well as 12 hour on and off rounds. Burns you out. It seems like it might be easy, but reguardless of the population, you must remain alart AT ALL TIMES. I know above all people you can appreciate how truely exhausting this can be. What sucks is it's a burnout job. Though you usually only work 2-4 days a week.
Don't sweat the small stuff, and ya know what? It's all small stuff.

Re: What the hell ..
I like your made up stats and all, but you're just simply wrong about this.
I live in a fairly small city (suburb of Salt Lake, which isn't exactly Los Angeles itself), and our EMT's are still very busy. They generally respond to every call that the fire department takes, in addition to their own calls involving heart attacks, accidents, shootings, etc.
Feel free to tell me that you'd "love" to have their job when you've tried to resuscitate a 3 year old who was an unintended target of a driveby shooting, or when you get to do chest compressions on someone who was just pulled from a fire and has burns over 70% of their body, or when you get to clean up some bloody mess of a major car accident.
I'll guarantee that nearly every EMT in the country has one of these situations once a week. Most of their calls may be mundane, stupid shit, but the 10% of their workweek that's crazy is what makes them so valuable.
It's fucking ridiculous that Paramedics and firefighters are so underpaid. These guys should make at least 50-60k/year for what they do (whoever said 100k.. that's a little extreme)

Re: What the hell ..
I used to work with our fire department and EMT/paramedics in both Salt Lake and San Diego... Most EMT's are NOT using it as a stepping stone to med school... MOST are using it as a stepping stone to the fire department. Most FD's have a significant waiting list to be firemen, but they're always looking for EMT's and paramedics... A lot of guys get their EMT certification so that they can quickly move on to a paramedic certification, which is a guaranteed job in the fire department (and it pays better than both the EMT job and non-paramedic firefighters).
It's the best way to climb the ladder if you're interested in actually making a career working in emergency services.

Re: What the hell ..
Let's not forget how nice it is to resusitate someone via mouth-to-mouth only to have them puke on you. Yep. People puke, shit and piss when they are brought back, one of the "little" things they leave out of CPR classes.
I've been a licensed paramedic and a volunteer firefighter for years. Anyone who says EMT's sit on their asses most likely lives in a crack den where SHPOS are the common denominator and no one gives a shit.
For those of you without a clue? A SHPOS is a Sub Human Piece of Shit.

Re: What the hell ..
I attempted CPR on someone once. She was shot through the heart and dead before she hit the ground.
As I pumped her ribcage, the blood was oozing out of the bullet hole.
Sad day indeed.
True story!

Re: What the hell ..
If you're pumping their rib cage, you're not performing CPR, you're performing the heimlich manuever.
Maybe if you knew what you were doing, she'd still be alive. Of course, being the raging homo that you are, you were probably afraid to touch anywhere near her boobs, so you settled for 4" too low.

Re: What the hell ..
Luckily, I've never given mouth to mouth... I've always had bag resuscitators.. Amazingly, I've never come across an emergency situation requiring CPR when I wasn't prepared... Apparently our emergency services here are just that good.. If you don't witness it, the Fire department will probably beat you there.
