      Sexual abuse charges... too harsh?

This may be the first time in my life I've ever heard anyone question whether or not a sentencing on sexual abuse charges may be TOO harsh.

      Here's the story:
A judge sentenced Jon White to 12 years for molesting two of his students while he taught in Normal. That sentence will run back to back with his 48-year sentence he got in Champaign County earlier this month for abusing eight of them. He won't be eligible for parole until the year 2037. The judge in this case heard two days of testimony and from Jon White himself before making this decision. White said he had talked with murders in prison that say they felt no remorse for their crimes and that he was different. Much like in Champaign County, he apologized to his victim's parents and asked the judge to give him a shot at being a productive member of society sometime down the line. In the end, defense attorneys say White didn't abuse the girls like the prosecution says he did. "He was convicted of putting a banana in a child's mouth for sexual gratification.” Says defense attorney Carol Dison “There was no physical contact between Mr. White and those children." Assistant States Attorney Kim Campbell disagrees. "They knew.” She says, “They're too young to have known the full implication, but they knew that this was wrong. They felt weird about it, they were scared." She says. After his remarks, the judge said White still hadn't accepted all of the responsibility for his actions, and the assistant state's attorney handling this case agrees. "Although the defendant did express remorse.. it was imperfect remorse.” She says, “Because while we believe he was contrite today, he has never accepted full responsibility in terms of admitting he has a problem and the he sexually fantasized about children." White's defense team says they plan to appeal the judge's ruling. Either way, both cases in Champaign and McLean counties have reached their last phase.

      (Directly quoted from http://illinoishomepage.net/content/fulltext/?cid=12960)

Yeah, so to sum it up, this local school teacher would get his kicks from watching little girls lick bananas. The dude is a pervert, obviously. No one is arguing that.

This guy has been sentenced to 60 years, total. When the story was initially released, the news made it out to be that this teacher had been busted for blindfolding girls and making them "lick the banana." Now it turns out the phrase was quite literal. While I was quick to dismiss the story as yet another way the world was fucked, and glad to see the teacher was busted for being a sick little monkey, I was surprised to hear people questioning the harshness of his sentence. Now it has me wondering.

So.. is 60 years too harsh a sentence for a school teacher who did not actually physically touch these children sexually?

      Yes. And .... No.

60 years is too long for me to wait to enact proper parentally applied justice.

If my child comes home and tells me that some dude ( or chic ) has forced or coerced him (her) into a lewd or age inappropriate
act Mr. Gary WILL NOT be going to the police with this information.

Mr.Gary will be making a clandestine 0200 visit to the Pervs address and having a face to face chat with him/her.

      Why ?

Because the court system invariably fucks it up nearly every time. I would make it short and sweet with no loss of tax dollars,
I would either remove the pervs desire to perform these acts again ... or remove their desire to breath.

The children said they were frightened at the time, he admits he has a problem, he admits sexually fantacizing about children and he exploited children while in a position of trust for his own sexual gratification...the term is not excessive regardless of whether there was physical contact or not.

True enough.. and as a parent I completely agree with you.

But allow me to play devil's advocate for a moment.

Isn't it possible that this man would have never come to the point of actually physically sexually abusing children? Had the man been thrown out of his teaching position, and even served some time, isn't it possible that he could have become a productive member of society later?

There are a whole lot of other slimebags that don't get nearly that amount of sentencing.

(On a personal note, I don't really care whether or not the sentencing is just. I'm just glad to know that a potential child molester is off the streets, but that's besides the point.)

If the offender went as far as coercing a small child into enacting sexual acts, then whats stopping him from acting upon his perverted urges and raping them the next time?

      60 years isnt nearly enough.

If only all judges were as 'harsh'.

The USA has approximately 370 million muldunes .....

What exactly does 'productive member of society' mean ?

Will he be used for attack dog training ? That's productive.

Anything else but that and its a waste of space and time, we have 9 bazillion other motherfuckers fighting
for jobs and normalcy and have no business trying to train the perversion out of an asshole like the guy in question.

We don't need a scum bag fledgling molester in our ranks regardless of the rehabilitation potential.

I agree that 60 years is too harsh a punishment...

but I also don't see this guy ever "fixing his problem."

There has to be more to the story than this? The man must have exposed himself or was masturbating otherwise l can see no point in the blindfold or the sentence given.

l remember whilst at school myself and others being blindfolded and tasting various fruits to see if we could identify them. There was nothing sexual to this so the man in question must have been doing something otherwise there was no case to answer?

The 'wannabe' is guilty because of 'thoughts' alone?

lf one is looking at images, downloading images, on chat sites with children, he/she is a paedophile by legal definition.

Bang the fucker up, and see how HE fucking feels when some big bloke tells him to "lick THIS banana".

Not a harsh sentence at all. It should have been longer.

You never know if he would have acted upon any urges. Making those children lick banannas was just the beginning. Next those banannas could have gone somewhere else...

When it comes to taking pedophiles off the streets and away from children, 60 years and up in Jail is WONDERFUL. I just hope he's having his shitpacked.

I don't understand the reasoning behind the arguments in this thread at all.

Unless you agree with giving life sentences to people who steal packs of gum from the store (because stealing small things could lead to larger-scale robbery and eventually murder), you can't really argue that a man should be put away for 60 years for what he might have done.

I agree with Severina; there must have been circumstances that we don't know about for this to be at all justifiable.

Don't give me that bullshit. You fucking liberals and your reasoning piss me off.

A child's welfare and a pack of gum do not fucking equate.

That Dude fucked with the sanctity of a child's innocence. The world is fucked as it is with out having to learn about it before the age of understanding.

In Gary's world child molesters and exploiters of the young will all die a lonely horrible death. NO fanfare .. no appeals .. no storage for decades.

Whoa, easy on calling me a liberal. I'm about as politically apathetic as they come, and I make my decisions on my own.

If you believe what you're saying, you must believe by default the following things:

      A. Michael Jackson should get a life sentence because the child that he dangled out the window could have died.
      B. Anyone who gives a girl (or guy) a slap on the ass without permission must serve a mandatory sixty years in prison for what that slap might have led to.
      C. Anyone smoking marijuana should be charged with dealing heroin, because marijuana can lead to heavier drug use (which also leads to dealing, which coincidentally leads to "the violation of innocence").

Not believing any of those things after your previous reasoning would be self-contradictory. Charging people for what they might have done is a bad road to go down.

      No.

Sexual abuse is it's own animal and as such can and should be considered independent of all those other things you include.

I was beaten repeatedly as a child. Beaten to the point of unconsciousness on many occasions. Beaten so often that I thought it was a normal part of how to end a day. Still ... what I went through is but a shadow of the damage that a child that goes through sexual predation endures.

You may spin your words all you want in the pursuit of "fairness" of law.

I choose to use a rusty spoon to scoop the eyeballs from every fucking child porn freak, pedophile in training, lowlife scum, on Earth.

Good luck on your quest, Captain Law.

The law is there not only to prosecute the guilty but to protect the innocent.

lndiscriminate use of the law then endangers the innocent and by the innocent l mean you, GDP, me and everyone else here. l agree with Dunamis, all l've seen so far is people acting on emotion.

lf laws are used indiscriminately and they are contested in a higher court and subsequently found to be unlawful, it would then mean people who are like this sick pervert then walk free. No-one wants that, do they?

Not soo fast! I agree .. if there is cause then he is fair game.. might as well sell a permit and bank the $ off the people willin to hunt the molester...

But! If all he did was make them eat a banana seductively? the kids felt weird b/c they had to do so seductively. I'm assuming slowly and deep throating the banana before they could eat it ? yes, this would make me feel strange having a teacher watch me slowly eat a banana. The sexual conection wouldn't be there for the child. Thats an adult thing.

#1 he didn't touch the child
#2 he had them eat healthy ( a lawyer would fight for this)
#3 its a child and can't be held responsible for themselves or their remarks.

60 years? I think its too much. Had he TOUCHED someone... molested.. or otherwise invade their personal space.. YESS! I'm with you in the lynching... but this one? No.... the sentence is to high. he will be put in with other molesters in a special unit ( not general public) and he will learn how to do much worse ....
His teacher paycheck kept him from going further.. now that thats gone... he has nothing but a felon on his record ( when he gets out) andNOTHING going for him. BUT! he does have his newfound knowledge of being imprisoned and all of what his fellow inmates have taught him.

He will be more a threat when he gets out than he is now.

      From the article:
'White designed what has become known as the “taste-testing game” at the Normal school, said Rietz.

White was caught viewing adult pornography on his classroom computer at Hoose before he was allowed to resign with a letter of recommendation.

Later, evidence was found that showed White may have been looking at child pornography on his home computer.

Defense attorney Brett Olmstead made it clear in his arguments that the allegations against White involved the teacher blindfolding students and asking them to lick various toppings from a banana. Later, White performed a sexual act in the classroom with scarves and blindfolds the children had worn during the tasting game, said Olmstead.

Calling White “a master manipulator, a deceiver and a betrayer of trust,” Olmstead said the case against White varies from other sexual abuse cases because the children did not perform any sexual acts.'
