      Astrology

I was doing a little reading during work, and i found something i found most interesting. Something a little more of a logical argument on astrology. It's made me reconfig my whole position on it.

'Astrology operates only when no cause opposes itself to the good the stars can do.

One would not have succeeded better in discrediting the astrologer by saying: Of two children who were born in the same minute, one has been king, the other has been only churchwarden of his parish; for the astrologer could very well have defended himself by pointing out that the peasant made his fortune when he became churchwarden, as the prince when he became king.

And if one alleged that a bandit whom Sixtus V. had hanged was born at the same time as Sixtus V., who from a pig-herd became Pope, the astrologers would say one had made a mistake of a few seconds, and that it is impossible, according to the rules, for the same star to give the triple crown and the gibbet. It is then only because a host of experiences belied the predictions, that men perceived at last that the art was illusory; but before being undeceived, they were long credulous. '

The thing i find fascinating is he's right, there are many cases of 'the prince and the popper' where twins are born, one is set to ruin the other to greatness. Any arguments for or against astrology?

Maths is my main argument against astrology. For each day of the year there is mathmatically 18 million people born, so one can see how easily predictions can be correct for a great deal of people by mere coincidence alone.

The other is man's belief that there is something out there that controls his life i.e. it's not my fault my life has gone to hell ... it was written in the stars. The ultimate getout clause relinquishing you of all responsibility!

Another is people change their lives to follow the predictions ... thus proving them correct!

Strangely some people who don't believe in astronomy and have read their predictions will do anything to make the predictions not come true but this means that the stars DO have an impact on their lives!

One way to look at them is to look at what they said a week ago and see how closely they mirrored your actual life ... but beware of coincidences as they are very common due to how we all live quite similar lives and go through almost the same experiences one time or another.!

Sorry for not replying earlier, but i thought this was such a good argument, that there really wasn't a need to continue. I was reading up on the moons and planets effecting things. It's interesting because i just dont see it. For instance jupiter is passing into capricorn or some shit. It's suppose to mean people are going to be wanting teh stability. Here is the thing. Can you ever think of a time where you wouldn't want stability in some form? When astrology says something like 'today your meeting the girl of your dreams' or 'today make sure you pick up your suit from the dry cleaners, cause your boss is going to base your promotion on it' then i can give it more legitamacy. But fuck, 'today your going to want to feel loved' 'today your more at risk for being sad' shit, really? You mean i might be sad today? Ever watch that movie astrology? That movie about that guy and that girl? Yea it was totally awesome!!!
Don't sweat the small stuff, and ya know what? It's all small stuff.

      Re: Astrology

Some countries do not even use the same signs which in our Western culture is Greek.

With the Earth moving through the universe and galaxy, some 10,000 years later, there will be a completely different visual perspective of the constellations.

Even now observing the stars from different planets are going to give completely different shapes to the constellations.

I do not support astrology on that basis alone.
