Religion
What religion are you, and what are your views on it, and the other religions of the world. Discuss. I want to hear your thoughts.
Don't sweat the small stuff, and ya know what? It's all small stuff.

Re: Religion
I was born Catholic, and I'm pissed about that. I am an atheist, and I have been when I started watching "Bill Nye, The Science Guy," and started reading up on science. I passionately despise religion in all forms and have extremely little patience for dealing with idiots who would suspend all rational thought processes in order to believe in a guy who lived in the sky and said, "Let there be..." and there was. I hate the self-contradictions. However, I do have to say, religion has done some great things for society in the past couple thousand years. All the pain, all the racial hate, slavery, the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, all the religion-based stuff that's going down in the Middle East, you know, great stuff. Way to go there, religion. Way to FAIL.
It also amazes me how religious people can look at other religions like $cientology and point fingers. Oh, those people are fucked up, Jesus Christ is the one true god. Are you serious? Take a step back and look at what you believe in first, fix yourself, then get back to those poor bastards. Once you get those crap ideas out of your fuckin' skull, then help others get the crap ideas out of their fuckin' skulls. All religion is equally ridiculous and none of 'em make a goddamned shred of sense.
Theism is nothing more than primitive man's answer to the question 'why?' That question has been asked since time as we knew it began and originally it was answered by god. Now we should know better, but some people are still behaving like Neanderthals and believing in a god.
Religion is nothing more than a control tool for the mentally weak. Simply threaten the masses with something so terrible that they don't want to even think about it, like Hell, and they'll do whatever you say, provided they are stupid enough. And shit, look around. There's a helluva lot of stupid people, still to this day. They still believe in that shit.
Furthermore, religion has done nothing but stand in the way of scientific advancement, time and time again. Look at what happened to Galileo and Copernicus. And even to this day, with this whole stem cell research fiasco. Its the religious idiots who are standing in the way of progress.
I hate religion and it needs to go. Its time is over, we should be a more advanced society, but with stupid shit like this, we're not. Religion is a big part of why Society Sucks.

Re: Religion

I was born into a born-again Christian family.. my mother has since floated around many different forms of Christian churches.
I don't really care. Religion doesn't play a role in my daily life, so I don't pay it much mind. As for other people being religious, I don't care so long as nothing gets pushed onto me.

Re: Religion
COURT SETS ATHEISTS HOLIDAY
In Florida an atheist became incensed over the preparation of Easter and Passover holidays. He decided to contact his lawyer about the discrimination inflicted on atheists by the constant celebrations afforded to Christians and Jews with all their holidays while atheists had no holiday to celebrate. The case was brought before a judge. After listening to the long passionate presentation by the lawyer, the Judge banged his gavel and declared, "Case Dismissed!"
The lawyer immediately stood and objected to the ruling and said, "Your honor, how can you possibly dismiss this case? The Christians have Christmas, Easter and many other observances. Jews have Passover, Yom Kippur and Hanukkah yet my client and all other atheists have no such holiday!"
The judge leaned forward in his chair and simply said, "Obviously your client is too confused to even know about it much less celebrate his own atheists' holiday!"
The lawyer pompously said, "Your Honor, we are unaware of any such holiday for atheists. Just when might that holiday be?"
The judge said, "It comes every year on exactly the same date---April 1st! Since our calendar sets April 1st as 'April Fools Day,' consider that Psalm 14:1 states, 'The fool says in his heart, there is no God.' Thus, in my opinion, if your client says there is no God, then by scripture, he is a fool, and April 1st is his holiday! Now have a good day and get out of my courtroom!!"
Way to go, Judge!
AMEN"Treat everyone with dignity and respect....but always be prepared to shoot 'em!"

Re: Religion
I'm Catholic, not by choice. It's weird because I believe in God. There HAS to be a higher being, but I don't believe in the whole Adam and Eve thing. I don't believe in creation. I belive in Evolution. I don't believe God took Seven days to create the world.
Forgive me, because I never read the bible, and I am totally ignorant on the subject, but what about Dinosaurs? Who created dinosaurs?
Also, they say we have a soul, and when we die our body gets a little lighter..blah blah blah. Do I believe this? I dont know... See, I kind of think of our bodies like a car. The outside is the shell, and the engine is what controlls is(our brains) and once we die, it gets shut off, nothing else. No soul flies out. But I'm kind of torn with that.
And I also believe(sorry die hard christians) that the bible could have been made to sort of keep the peace and prevent violence.
This was about religion and I added more here.. sorry.
Okay about other peoples religions.. I really don't give a shit what anyone else believes. I just wish they would stop coming to my door, stop giving pamphlets to my son as we are walking by, and stop preaching in the street. Every now and then we take the staten island Ferry, and there's always some nut job on there preaching. Good God, get something else to do.
Also I don't like how some muslims take their religion a little too seriously and kill because they'll get 13 virgins or something. Geeeze.

Re: Religion
I'd agree (to a lesser extent) with much of what you said...
but this part isn't particularly accurate.
primitive man was most likely incapable of any higher order (in this context not DIRECTLY related to survival) thinking...and therefore was not the first to conceive of 'god'
the closest a 'primative man's' thought process might've come to 'god'-like thinking was MAYBE a basic superstition.
dead son. sad. lightning strike. son move. no sad. lightning=good.
the conception of a higher power [not entirely true. I suppose I'm speaking a little more of religion here than actual belief in a (or many) god(s), but humor me for a minute] came MUCH later...along with society. when men in power needed a fail proof means to enact social control.
listen to me.
why?
well...cause if not you burn in hell forever.
oh, ok.
god has spoken. amen

Re: Religion
People such as yourself irritate me. I don't give a fuck what religion someone believes in, as long as they aren't just "going with the flow" and consciously choosing to be an ignorant idiot regarding things. Have reasons for your beliefs, backed up by at least some distantly related facts and/or knowledge of the areas you voice an opinion on, or alternately, shut the fuck up about things you obviously don't know anything about in the first place.
In your post, you basically said that you don't know jack shit but Christians are WRONG. Great job changing the focus from you not knowing anything, but being opinionated anyhow, to someone else being wrong. No one wants someone else to judge them, including Christians. It seems to me that you're the most judgmental person in this social group, and that's the main aspect of religion that seems to piss the most people off... the whole "I'm right, you're wrong and going to hell" concept.
Oh wait, and you're "Catholic, not by choice"? What's that supposed to mean? You got forced at gunpoint to confess to a priest, eat wafers, drink wine, get your children baptized as infants, etc? I kind of doubt that. If you're listed at a Catholic church as a member (to appease your husband, mother, etc.), and disregard the religion or the majority of its basis (e.g. Adam and Eve, the Bible in general), then you're just another judgmental hypocrite that makes your religion look like shit.
Again, I reiterate, I don't have a problem with religions. I have a problem with the assholes that abuse religion for selfish reasons. Most religions teach selflessness.
As to me? I don't hold a religion. It's obvious to anyone educated that the idea that people evolved from rocks (and yes, if you look into the evolution theory, that's pretty much what it boils down to) is mathematically and scientifically impossible, so I do believe there is something going on that we don't know about. I definitely don't want hypocritical assholes telling me what the answer is, though. I'm pretty sure if it's important enough that I find the answer before I die, that it will come without the help of ignorant idiots.
And Jenn, this isn't a personal attack against you. It's mainly against people LIKE you, not you. So don't use up your Midol and pretend not to care.

Re: Religion
I have my beliefs, you have yours. I was baptized catholic. I didnt chose it and I know I can change it. Im not judgemental when it comes to religion. I just have my beliefs. Telling me it's against people LIKE me is telling me that it's against me too. But, it's fine. It's how you feel. I never said Christians are wrong. Again, I just stated my beliefs. I could be wrong, Christians could be wrong, any religion could be wrong. ITS what the followers believe. You seem to have a thing with following me around when I do or say something and basically telling me what I say and how I meant it. You've done it on FY, and you're doing it here. Seriously, are you in my mind? Nope.

Re: Religion
no, that's me.
but honestly...if you weren't so quick to defend yourself...we'd all get bored with bashing you.
its the same with buddha. mention either of your names three times, and much like beetlejuice or bloody mary you show up.
difference is, you guys show up with 83 lines of typed text just TRYING to get someone to respond to you.
stop being such a crybaby...and maybe everyone will just go ahead and forget you exist (I was gonna say leave you alone, but that would've been too generous)
on topic:
meh. I don't actually have anything else to say on topic.
fuck!
I tried...

Re: Religion
No, there doesn't HAVE to be a higher being.
No one created dinosaurs. No one created humans.
That... Is the worst analogy I have ever heard. You're an idiot.
Its 72. Shithead.
Um... Most Christians do believe in the Bible. That's what makes them Christians. And I find it appalling that you would willingly force a religion on your son. What kind of parent are you, to allow your husband to brainwash your poor son into ignoring rational thought and embracing complete fiction?
