Wow. Get the tissues ready
Her hair was up in a pony tail,
her favourite dress tied with a bow.
Today was Daddy's Day at school,
and she couldn't wait to go.
But her mummy tried to tell her,
that she probably should stay home.
Why the kids might not understand,
if she went to school alone.
But she was not afraid;
she knew just what to say.
What to tell her classmates,
why he wasn't there today.
But still her mother worried,
for her to face this day alone.
And that was why once again,
she tried to keep her daughter home.
But the little girl went to school
eager to tell them all.
About a dad she never sees,
about a dad who never calls.
There were daddies along the back wall,
for everyone to meet.
Children squirming impatiently,
anxious in their seats.
One by one the teacher called
a student from the class.
To introduce their daddy,
as seconds slowly passed.
At last the teacher called her name,
every child turned to stare.
Each of them was searching
for a man who wasn't there.
'Where's her daddy at?'
She heard a boy call out.
'She probably doesn't have one,'
another student dared to shout.
And from somewhere near the back,
she heard a daddy say,
'Looks like another deadbeat dad,
too busy to waste his day.'
The words did not offend her,
as she smiled up at her Mum.
And looked back at her teacher,
who told her to go on.
And with hands behind her back,
slowly she began to speak.
And out from the mouth of a child,
came words incredibly unique.
'My Daddy couldn't be here,
because he lives so far away.
But I know he wishes he could be,
since this is such a special day.
And though you cannot meet him,
I wanted you to know
all about my daddy,
and how much he loves me so.
He loved to tell me stories,
he taught me to ride my bike.
He surprised me with pink roses,
and taught me to fly a kite.
We used to share fudge sundaes,
and ice cream in a cone.
And though you cannot see him,
I'm not standing here alone.
'Cause my daddy's always with me,
even though we are apart -
I know because he told me,
he'll be forever in my heart'
With that, her little hand reached up,
and lay across her chest.
Feeling her own heartbeat,
beneath her favourite dress.
And somewhere in the crowd of dads,
her mother stood in tears.
Proudly watching her daughter,
who was wise beyond her years.
For she stood up for the love
of a man not in her life.
Doing what was best for her,
doing what was right.
And when she dropped her hand back down,
staring straight into the crowd.
She finished with a voice so soft,
but its message clear and loud.
'I love my daddy very much,
he's my shining star..
And if he could, he'd be here,
but heaven's just too far.
You see he is a soldier
And died just this past year
When a roadside bomb hit his convoy
and taught brave men to fear.
But sometimes when I close my eyes,
it's like he never went away.'
And then she closed her eyes,
and saw him there that day.
And to her mother's amazement,
she witnessed with surprise.
A room full of daddies and children,
all starting to close their eyes.
Who knows what they saw before them,
who knows what they felt inside.
Perhaps for merely a second,
they saw him at her side.
'I know you're with me Daddy,'
to the silence she called out.
And what happened next made believers,
of those once filled with doubt.
Not one in that room could explain it,
for each of their eyes had been closed.
But there on the desk beside her,
was a fragrant long-stemmed pink rose.
And a child was blessed, if only for a moment,
by the love of her shining star.
And given the gift of believing,
that heaven is never too far.

Nice, but predictable from start to finish. It would have been better if it turned out her Dad was abducted by rock and roll loving aliens. But he wasn't. He was just dead. Loads of people have died. But how many have been abducted by rock and roll loving aliens?

I agree. I even foresaw that her daddy was a soldier. The whole reason they don't come right out and say as much in the beginning is because they wanted to save it and drop it on you like an emotional bomb at the end.
Trouble is all the explosive material is leaked out slowly throughout the poem so that by the end, the actual explosion seems more like a fizzle. All in all though, a valiant effort. And I admit, probably better than I could do.

Nice poem, it reminds me of a ditty penned about sailors missing Christmas every year, and how you sleep so comfortably in your beds on Christmas eve, and we're at sea blowing holes in entire post codes.
A well written verse, and if I find it, I'll share it.

Suprisingly easy to locate.
Sailor's Christmas
Twas the night before Christmas, the ship was out steaming,
Sailors stood watch while others were dreaming.
They lived in a crowd with racks tight and small,
In a 80-man berthing, cramped one and all.
I had come down the stack with presents to give,
And to see inside just who might perhaps live.
I looked all about, a strange sight did I see,
No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.
No stockings were hung, shined boots close at hand,
On the bulkhead hung pictures of a far distant land.
They had medals and badges and awards of all kind,
And a sober thought came into my mind.
For this place was different, so dark and so dreary,
I had found the house of a Sailor, once I saw clearly.
A Sailor lay sleeping, silent and alone,
Curled up in a rack and dreaming of home.
The face was so gentle, the room squared away,
This was the Australian Sailor today.
This was the hero I saw on TV,
Defending our country so we could be free.
I realized the families that I would visit this night,
Owed their lives to these Sailors lay willing to fight.
Soon round the world, the children would play,
And grownups would celebrate on Christmas Day.
They all enjoyed freedom each day of the year,
Because of the Sailor, like the one lying here.
I couldn't help wonder how many lay alone,
On a cold Christmas Eve on a sea, far from home.
The very thought brought a tear to my eye,
I dropped to my knees and started to cry.
The Sailor awakened and I heard a calm voice,
"Santa, don't cry, this life is my choice."
"Defending the seas all days of the year,
So others may live and be free with no fear."
I thought for a moment, what a difficult road,
To live a life guided by honor and code.
After all it's Christmas Eve and the ship's underway!
But freedom isn't free and it's sailors who pay.
The Sailor say's to our country "be free and sleep tight,
No harm will come, not on my watch and not on this night.
The Sailor rolled over and drifted to sleep,
I couldn't control it, I continued to weep.
I kept watch for hours, so silent, so still,
I watched as the Sailor shivered from the night's cold chill.
I didn't want to leave on that cold dark night,
This guardian of honor so willing to fight.
The Sailor rolled over and with a voice strong and sure,
Commanded, "Carry on Santa, It's Christmas, and All is Secure!"
They awoke in the moning, and attended our watch,
With air radar spinning, and warmth in their crotch.
They looked at each other, and then they felt glad,
They blew up the Muslims that lived in Baghdad.

I wrote the last verse myself, I think it seals the deal quite nicely.

Well, I'm off to Afghanistan in a few days. Looks like I'll be out there for about a year.
I expect to have intermittent access to the net, but I suspect that either part or all of this site will be filtered. So I doubt I'll be visiting here very much.
Anyway, take care. Best of luck to all of you. See you in a year.

Combat tours in the Marine Corps are supposed to be for just seven months, but for reasons that I cannot discuss on a public forum, we're expecting to be there longer.
A year is a long time. Most of all, I'm going to miss my Japanese girls. You know, I used to hate that squeaking thing they do when getting diddled, but it's grown on me over the past year. One of them made an audio clip of it for me that I can listen to on those lonely nights. I asked for a video too, but she said she doesn't trust me running around with a movie of her engaged in hitori ecchi. Smart girl. I wouldn't trust me either.
Anyway, I've still got a ton of packing to do and preparations to make.
Take care, buddy.

I'm sure if I had a uterus, I would probably have read on to find some pseudo-sentimental poem that might have been somewhat heart-wrenching. But since I am the embodiment of manliness, I got as far as "Her hair was...", lost interest, and jerked off instead.
