All the basic ones like "your" and "you're", "there", "they're" and "their", "its" and "it's" drive me fucking bonkers but I was never able to get a good grasp on the ones like "sneaked/snuck", "hanged/hung" and "laid/lie", etc. We have such a dumb language.

Indeed.

I live with an English as a second language person. She has a few issues with words like BUILD vs BUILT and similar.

German likewise has me sounding like a cave man as I am unable to get the female/male/neutral version of a word correct for the conversation at hand.

I have the same problem with Spanish sometimes--- and I'm fluent!

That's why there needs to be a "common" language. Check this one out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esperanto.

And yes, sneaked and snuck are both words, but it depends on the usage.

This brings me up to another idea. I hate language nazis. People act as if language has always been and has not evolved.

If you read texts from a few hundred years ago it sounds like everyone flunked out of 2nd grade English. So many words are spelled differently (usually more phonetically) and there are a bunch of words that are in slightly different form.

That's because you live in the South and they have their own rules. Let me know when you see a KKK march. I've at least seen one of those (Greensboro,N.C.).
