View Full Version : The price of food
My husband and I went food shopping last night and I couldn't believe the prices! We go every two weeks, and within two weeks, milk went from $3.99 a gallon, to almost $7! I refused to pay that, so we went to a corner store for the milk afterward. The price of cheese, cereal, and rice has jumped up too! We normally spend $240 every two weeks, but yesterday it was like $280. The fricken meats went up too. I really feel sorry for those who struggle as it is..
Has the price of food jumped where you guys live too?

Wow , milk is still like 3.89 here in Il. Sorry to hear it Jen. Feeding a family is indeed costly!

An abortion would have been less than the cost of two months food for the little brats.
A clear financial winning choice if you ask me.

It's not my children, its my husband.. he eats the most.. I guess If i either killed him my food bill will go down drastically. Actually, I'd take $7 a gallon of milk over like $130 a month for his smoking habits anyway.

The most surprising raise to me was for APPLES. Here, it's cheaper to buy a couple pounds of clementines than 5 apples. That's absolutely outrageous.

The price of breakfast cereal nearly knocked my socks off a couple of weeks back. It's now 2-3 times more what it was when I was a kid, yet minimum wage certainly hasn't doubled.
Though, I have to hand it to IL.. while the country-wide rate is $5.85, I think, the minimum wage for Illinois is to hop up to $7.75.

Oh, I know.. me and my son are cereal lovers, and my goodness.. it's $6 a box of wheaties, and my son doesn't like the generic brand cereal.. he has to have his cocoa puffs, lol.

I know how you feel Jenn.
When I moved from the city to where I am now, I expected the price of meat, esp beef and dairy products to be cheaper, considering I live near the Beef Capital AND NORCO (the factory the produces the dairy products for the North Coast). But sadly, my food bill went from 200-250 dollars every 2 weeks to almost 400 dollars. Not only that, I find it hard pressed to buy an apple under 75cents. A SINGLE APPLE!
Meh. That's life I suppose :(

An advantage of not residing among the lower class. You should look into it.

If it got that bad as to where I had to pay $400 every two weeks for food, I would start buying generic brands. I should try that now, but I cant stand the way certain things taste.
Yeah, apples psha, my son eats basically all fruits...he LOVES apples and can have like 4 a day.. and my goodness, that gets bad. I always have to run to the store for apples and I noticed the prices went up. Which I don't mind because I would rather him put me into the poor house for apples, than chocolate or chips.

Jenn- I DO buy generic brands. A lot of them.
I usually buy generic for things that don't matter, like pasta, and rice, flour, cheese, eggs, milk, staple ingredients that would taste the same regardless of the brand.
I agree with cereal though, even though I usually don't eat it myself. Generic coco pops are horrible, and they're really not that much more expensive compared to the name brand ones.

All our dairy products went sky high about 6 months ago even though we are a dairy producing country.
The reasoning behind the price rise was the farmers would get the same high prices on the International market so we could either pay that price or they would sell it overseas and we could go without.
As petrol is so expensive now, every item of food ( and everything else) has risen in price to match the transport expenses.

I don't mind higher prices and economic downturn.
I get a strange sense of satisfaction knowing that some people are struggling and have to think twice before shoveling more calories down their fat retarded shit pipes.
It will only get worse before it gets better, and thats the truth. I say use your head and adapt, and watch others (read: minorities and poor) flounder and cry on national news about how hard life is and that the government needs to step in and save them.
I'm kind of an asshole about it I guess, but if things got 20 fold worse, it just wouldn't bother me.

6 years ago, I wouldn't have gave a shit if people struggle. But now that I am a mother, I put myself in their shoes and actually feel really bad for them. We can afford the food prices, but there are many people who cant and it sucks.
And sometimes I am affected by this, because you have your idiots who buy loads and loads of food, and when they get in the fucking check out line, and realize they dont have enough... I have to fucking wait there while they go through their shit deciding what to put back. I hate when people do that!

Children's sport is jeopardised by the rising petrol prices.
Parents are now reluctant to drive their children to sports games and these are being cancelled or result in "byes".

It's not just the price of oil, you fool.
Prices in my part of the world have gone up as well.
Rice is up 64% with freshwater fish at 27.7%
This is mainly affected by floods in the Guangdong province.
You can also thank the Americans for over spending on credit cards and not paying their goddamn home loans.

Fuck your groceries!
Our Prime Minister decided to implement an 'Alcopop' tax 6 weeks ago. Basically, 'Ready to Drink' spirit cans have incurred a massive tax overnight - the reason: Curb teenage binge drinking habits. Fucking cocksucker!
My Rum and Cola (six pack) cans 6 weeks ago - AU$18
My Rum and Cola (six pack) cans today- AU$27.
Considering the US dollar to the AU dollar is almost 1/1, I hope you sympathise with my dilemma.
In conclusion - meh.

Milk is still under $4 a gallon here in PA. Although it has gone up significantly in the last 6 months. Meat and fruits are sky high though. I like to cook steak on the grill, but now it's getting expensive. I don't buy cheap steak, but now I don't get to enjoy steak as often as I used to.
And Negitivecool, I bet if you were poor and were struggling to make ends meet, you would not have the same attitude you do now.
I, due to a heart attack and kidney disease, can't work and am barely scraping by on the meager $650 check that the gov't seems to think is enough to live on. Now, I know someone here is going to say why not get a desk job somewhere and say fuck the gov't. If it was that easy, I would. But my meds alone cost more than $5000 a month. If I go to work somewhere will lose my medicaid and not be able to pay for my meds. And I need those meds to live. So I'm kinda stuck in a catch 22. I want to work, but I don't want to lose my medical coverage. What am I to do?

Holy shit that is ridiculous...Why is it that governments worldwide try to solve problems in the most retarded way possible? Do they get a bonus for how outrageously stupid their legislation can be?

I always thought if a person receives government assistance, they can have a low paying job? I have a friend on disability, and he works with no issues and is able to keep his medicaid. He just doesn't make a lot of money.

I can could get a part time job, but I would lose my prescription coverage. I would still have my medicaid but I would have to pay full price for my meds. It's a major loop hole ( the bad kind) that i'm stuck in.

How much are prescription items Stateside? Is it across the board, or does it vary from state to state? Is there a charge for each prescription, or is it based on the number of items on it?

The prices vary from drug to drug. But they are all price per pill. With my prescription plan I have I only pay $1 per prescription. And I'm not sure if it varies from state to state but I'm sure it does. My one prescription is 1900 for a month's supply alone.

Do not address my feelings on the matter with rhetorical situations that mean absolutely shit to me; fuckin weak. If 'ifs' and 'buts' were candy and nuts we'd all have a merry christmas. I have made the right decisions in life, have taken the proper action, and worked hard enough to ensure that I never have to worry about being "poor." Half way intelligent people think about the future, and plan accordingly. Unless something magnificently tragic happens, which it may, I will never have to decide between paying for electricity or paying for my groceries, capiche?
Your subsequent rant had absolutely nothing to do with the cost of food. Your rant had more to do with the current state of health care than anything. Your situation, if not exaggerated, is indeed shitty.
However, it is just that---your situation, and is thus your business and your problem.
What am I to do?
Modern medicine allows you to live. I suggest you deal with the cost for obvious reasons.

I , too, made good decisions in life. I studied building trades in school, and went to a post secondary school for construction. I can build a house from the ground up. And I know my way around cars quite well, too.
But since this shit happened I can't do anything remotely physical without doubling over in pain and damn near passing out. And since i have not studied anything else, I don't have any skills that will land me a job or career that will pay enough for me to afford my meds.
But I am enrolled in school next spring for graphic design. So, yes I am doing something about it.
I did plan well. I used what I had saved up for retirement to pay my hospital bills. I worked hard all my life, and I got fucked over. That's life. I'm not complaining, just explaining my situation.

Wow. That could seriously add up to quite an amount if you're not so healthy....
Over here - because of the NHS - employed people pay £7.10 per item (nothing to do with how many pills are in there). There are exceptions, of course. OAPs, the unemployed, pregnant women, children under 16, and those on thyroid treatment get everything for free.
The logic behind the thyroid patients troubles me greatly. Yes, they are on meds for life because of the condition, but then so are patients with heart trouble, blood-pressure problems, CF.... I could go on. THEY don't get free scripts.
But yay if your thyroid packs in.
