I currently drive my 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 Quad cab to work every day.
It has a 27 gallon fuel tank.
I drive nearly 70 miles per day.
I get between 11-14 MPG.
I love the truck .. its NOT going to be sold regardless of fuel costs.
However ... I have grown tired of the nearly $700 per month fuel costs.
Therefore I have decided to buy the following :

If you noticed .. it is an ENDURO class. Also I chose a mid sized model instead of the largest one.
You may be envious at this time.

I also need a machine where I can take a muddy road or a rock covered path to a lake or other away spot if I desire ... hence my choice of a BMW Enduro.
One can't reasonably do that on a normal street bike.

It's a nice bike, but I've never really cared for enduros, personally. The dual purpose aspect sounds enticing, but in reality they're not particularly proficient in either realm. They're taller, thus making the center of gravity higher. Not what you want for optimum maneuverability. Off road, they're a handful. The softer tread compound, along with the absence of traction lugs, makes the tires virtually useless and downright hazardous. You might as well plan on eating shit and put some preemptive gouges in the fairing and cases. It's also much heavier than the average dirtbike. Again, she won't be nimble; even on dirt or gravel roads.
I didn't envision you as a Beemer guy. Especially in an on/off model. I figured a cruiser would be more your style. You could certainly find one much more economical than the BMW.
I had a friend with a similar bike who grew to hate it. It seemed out of place wherever it was, and ultimately proved impractical for its intended purpose. He ended up selling it to buy 2 separate bikes. One road bike for commuting and joyriding. The other a 4-stroke dirtbike for off road fun. He was much happier that way. Ended up costing just about the same too.

I understand about the weight/height/accessories deal.
I had to make a choice based on my desires.
I need a daily driver that's street legal and comfortable to drive.
I need an occasional trail bike the will mainly keep to the underdeveloped paths and open fertile fields.
The bike I chose has a low center of gravity.
And I will choose a tire combo that offers the best of both street and trail riding.
The Enduro is a great class of bike in my opinion.
Sounds like your friend was a tard and failed to understand the reality of the situation. Sounds like he expected the Enduro
to be as 'street' as a Ninja and as 'rugged' as a two stroke hill jumper.
I expect the bike to do exactly what it says it will do.
I do not expect to hair pin @ 90mph or take whoops and doubles at 40 feet of altitude.

This was my bike I bought back in '85, brand spanking new.
I went up and down California, from L.A. to Santo Rosalia of Baja Calif and ferried over to Guaymas and drove her down to Puerto Vallarta, back up to Mazatlan and ferried over to the tip of Baja at La Paz.
I also transported it to Japan and drove the hell out of her there.
NEVER NEVER had mechanical problems nor flat tires.
The only thing I ever did to her was upgrades.
Her name was: She Devil
I miss her. I think I'll cry now.:too_sad:

That's quite often the case with BMW's. Not enough supply to meet the demand. You never see leftover models on their floors.

I don't know what the fuck any of that means...Which probably makes what my upcoming opinion on the matter less significant.
I saw shaft driven was discussed. Not a fan of anything shaft driven. My Honda Shadow is shaft driven. Get a lot of "shaft jacking" (maturity, mmkay) at anything less than 2500 RPM on a road surface that has even a fraction of a percent uphill grade.
Makes for a choppy, bumpy, and annoying ride. Stick with chain or belt.

I had my BMW for over 10 years in 3 different countries and never had any problems with the Shaft drive.
Could be you had problems because it was a Honda and not BMW?
Just speaking from my personal experience as well as you are.
P.S.
BMW is most always a good choice in bikes because:
1. They are realiable and are NOT prone to breaking down.
2. If they do break down, there is a good chance you can fix it yourself, depending on the 'break' and your tech knowhow.
3. They still have a faily good re-sale value.

I totally disagree... my VTX is also shaft driven, while my R6 is chain driven..
The shaft drive is more reliable, quieter, and virtually maintenance free... Chains and belts require significant maintenance, noisy, ugly, and have the same "shaft jacking" you dislike at low RPM's, especially if they're not tensioned properly.
My vtx only gets the "shaft jacking" you mention if I REALLY lug the bike in 2nd gear.. If I come to a rolling stop and try to restart in 2nd gear, it happens, outside of that, nothing but smooth power start to finish.. Conversely, my R6 will flat out stall, quite often violently if I am in a significantly incorrect gear.
I'm infinitely sold on shaft drive bikes. The ONLY bike I'd choose a chain or belt drive over a shaft is a racing bike (which my R6 is), and the only reason for that is that the shaft steals a few horsepower more than a belt/chain drive does.

If you're getting a vibration from the shaft, it's because you're lugging the engine. I don't know where you got your 2500 RPM figure from, since Honda bikes don't come from the factory with a tachometer, but I can only assume it's incorrect. 2500 RPM is right in the middle of Honda's power band on cruisers. My suspicion is that it only happens when you're in the wrong gear and barely above idle revs (most honda's idle at 1100 RPM's)...
As you said, we can argue about it all day long, but what you described isn't simply a matter of preference.. Either you're wrong, or there's something wrong with your bike. Shafts don't shake and jump in the middle of their power band.

The 88's did. My Dad bought it new (He also had a Dyna low rider at the time). He eventually bought an Ultra and sold the dyna to a friend, and the Shadow to me eight years ago in excellent condition with only around 15,000 miles on it for 500 bucks (what a guy).
The shaft jacking was a complaint of his since he bought it.

So no sir, I do know that I'm at 2,500 RPM's. Even if I didn't have a tach, anyone that can shift manually on a motorcycle knows that 1,100 RPM sounds a lot different than 2,500.
