I've tried everything I know to make content happen but to no success. :62:

Can you figure out how to make it easier to find the threads with new responses to prior posts? The link in the upper right corner of the screen (You Have "x" Unread Posts) is unreliable as a hyperlink. Sometimes it works. Most times not.

Maybe the 'subscribed threads' link could go next to the unread posts link?

My thought was that when you link to here it always says "Be coherent or be silent!" .. I think it puts people off. Is there a way to embed part of the text that the link is tied to?

I'm not sure the next part can be helped, but this place tends to be inhospitable to new ideas. It's kind of a group of old dogs and no new tricks.

If you are talking about the facebook 'like' thing I belive you can edit out the Meta text.I do it for nearly every link I use when I add stuff to facebook.

The Be coherent .. is just the forum meta text, its been there since 2008, I've not thought much about it. I consider a rewrite.

I've tried everything I know to make content happen but to no success.

Rehashing old threads is not a bad idea, but as an Admin, what you did with "The line" was fucking lame.
All you got was me contesting it and some fucking ape, aping "idjit" as well as a wanna-be forum princess with a lame "yes" with nothing further to add.

You COULD have picked up at an earlier post in the thread that COULD have carried out more conversation and discussion.
For example:
Gary said:
"Not at all.

The subject matter is one that is strictly an opinionated individual viewpoint.

Neither of them is right, neither of them is wrong.

I could comment, but there is no way to sway the commie's viewpoint, no matter what I say."

By the way, it's K not C, but yeah, a mans got to put in a punch whenever he can. Especially if they are a FY.Com byproduct.

OF COURSE you won't agree with me and come up with more lame ass comments.

My advice: Choose wisely the post as to continue discussion where it may have left off.

Wrong. I spent 5 whole minutes going through my photobucket account and found these pics that have been sitting in there for 3-4 years. If my account hasn't gotten flagged and booted (again) by now, I think it's safe to link directly from pb. Don't act like it's a regular occurrence for my posts to turn into the dreaded red x.

De nada !! It is my pleasure to be here...

May I suggest making the blogs a more "visual" feature, like new posts. Or even the option of clicking a blog and changing it from private to a public thread?
I am currently having a debate/conversation with DT via her blog, and perhaps the forum would benefit (as in post count) from it, as I think it's an interesting topic. Maybe others won't... but there we go!

Just an idea.

The ones in which I've posted. I can click on each separate category (Green, Red, etc.) and scroll through to find the green arrows. But I'm pretty sure I'm losing a lot of threads that I can't remember where they are -- and that I'm still interested in following.

CrAnIuM

and that I'm still interested in following.

Since your visits are less than daily I suggest you 'subscribe' to the threads that you wish to follow. The subscription method will alert you via email when new post are made in the subscribed to thread.

Obviously you must have a valid email address listed in your contact area for it to reach you. ( I say this as a reminder since some folks use bogus email while registering.)

The first post on each page has a drop down with the 'subscribe' to link ( thread tool menu). You can see an aggregate list of all your subscriptions via a section in the settings area. ( link found top of the page, right side)

There is no other way that I know of to keep track in the manner you require other than subscription or a damn good memory.

There's an old adage that all publicity is good publicity. For online forums, this could rephrased as: "all manner of posts are good for driving eyeballs to your site."

While I think this may be true sometimes, online content is going through a shake-out period. Facebook will not reign supreme forever. How do I know this? Old ladies are using it now, and it will suffer the same fate as Buick and AOL. They won't be able to adjust fast enough to the younger, hipper crowd without alienating the old crones who demand that everything stays the way they learned it 10 years ago.

So, you have something of a marketing opportunity. Do you want a "hangout" space? Do you want a space that provides reliable original content? Or do you want a space where people instantly think to turn to find the "other" side of the stories popping up in the mainstream media sites?

What I see so far is a place where people come to make themselves feel better by knocking the other guy down a peg or two. The "gotchas", crazed name-calling, snarky sucker punches, and self-important crowing/preening are endemic here. It's not your fault that people, at this point in history, are this immature. But their behavior on your site certainly affects the appeal it does or doesn't have.

That said, the National Enquirer has -- and will always have -- a large audience. It's just a matter of picking your market and providing content they can't live without from the minute they turn on the computer for the day.

There is the problem. ^

I love working on cars, or any machinery for that matter, but absolutely HATE doing in for others. I think the production aspect kills the fun factor for me. The forum is the same way, I enjoy being a part of it and having a place to beat my chest and throw my half crazed beliefs and ideals around. But I'm not so sure I'd enjoy doing a regular "bit".

Hell, its been three years and I'm still learning how to code PHP. I'm perpetually behind the curve on stuff on the admin side.

OK. Found it. Done.

Note that it took me about 5 minutes to find the "subscribe" feature under "thread tools." This may as well be a lifetime in the interwebs. And, I knew it had to be there somewhere (because you said so), so I kept looking. I'm reminded that I looked for a subscribe feature at various times before, but wasn't willing to continue looking after a minute or so. Who knows how long it might take? 20 minutes? An hour?

I suddenly have a need to explain that I'm not being critical. I'm spending the time to explain my experience because you seem open to feedback about it. But I have a nagging feeling that I'll be ridiculed for my lack of technical skill, sheer idiocy, etc., etc. This is a direct result of the general tone of the forum itself. Even when people are trying to be helpful, you have a fair number of posters who seem to feel completely at ease pouncing on that person.

While I'm a big boy and simply write such behavior off as childish and sad, I'll bet you dollars to donuts that it scares a lot of people away. If you don't police a playground, the bullies will rule it. Everyone else will stand by the wall and remain as inconspicuous as possible.

You don't have to provide the content all on your own. There are plenty of people out there who love to talk about themselves. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to provide a stimulating place for them to do so on a regular basis. Your moderators would be the first place to start looking at how to improve your user experience. The biggest difference between a *really* shitty bus ride to the regional competition and a *really* fun one is the quality of the chaperones.

Asking questions is not at all a waste of my time as it helps me define what I need to write tutorials on. I've been reactive rather than proactive in this regard for too long.

I made the GREEN zone a troll free area to keep the kids in their place and allow free exchange of ideas. The blogs are also another area where the writer has full control over who may comment or not. I've started to ban folks from threads in the green zone when things get hijacked.

I, on the other hand, believe it is the conflict that keeps sites such as this alive. No conflict = no fun= few newcomers = boring.
If conflict and a few rude remarks "scares" people away, they don't belong here in the first place. I will not speak of your lack of technical skill. I just don't give a fuck about what skills you do or do not possess. And I will not speak of your sheer idiocy. I just don't care.

Civil disagreements are preferable when we are debating serious subject matter but that does not mean one can't be uncivil when the subject calls for it or when one feels it needs be used to interact with a particularly daft individual.

On the other hand, and In my opinion, folks that are constantly spitting bile at each other end up only surrounded by those types of people and THAT is just as boring as a place that is all nice nice all the time.

You have a Red Zone and a Dissent forum. For the life of me, I can't understand why, in something called The Green Zone (I'm assuming you named it after the "safer" embassy compound in a certain desert nation), people feel free to fling epithets at each other without even an attempt to:

1. Give the benefit of the doubt to the poster
2. Employ the basic rules of reasoned debate
3. Follow generally accepted global rules of business etiquette
4. Read a post in its entirely and seek understanding before reacting

If people want a screamfest, I have nothing against that. But you've provided a space for it.

Again ... this is simply FEEDBACK (to all of you who are flinging insults at me). When I take the time to reason something through and make the effort to view an issue through YOUR point of view and then respond without personally attacking you, I expect the same in return. If I get called "faggot" it hurts my feelings. Period. Yes, it's my problem and not yours. But it certainly doesn't inspire me to invest one scintilla of myself into anything that person has to say from there on out. Why bother? There's simply no point in it.

Gayest thread ever.

I'm a dad. I love my kids.

This asshole's thread could have been summarized to the aforementioned, posted on Facebook, and he could have totally avoided looking like a complete dolt.

Here's a news flash for you, boner; Nobody gives a fuck about how much you love your kids. A forum is not a democracy guy, freedom of speech does not extend to the private sector as a guaranteed right. Membership here is voluntary.

The BLOGS are 100% owned by the author, if the blog author wants to exclude comments they are allowed to do so with no strings attached its their call ALL the time.

The Green Zone is likewise an author owned area, with a caveat of a Staff member being the arbitrator for disputes.

Every other part of the forum is only policed for forum rule violation.

And I'm not trying to make this into a big deal....but is the first quote of your's that I brought down not a form of censorship?
Can one just not read the posts that offend them and Ignore the poster who posted them in the first place?

^ Just trying to help with some different points of view.

Insincere. How believable is that statement when juxtaposed against:

If you shove objects up your asshole while having butt buddy take pictures, then you're just fucked in the head.

And then:

Buck up man. You're not in Kansas anymore.

That's right up there with: "If she didn't want to get raped then she shouldn't have dressed like a slut."

Had you bothered to read the entire sentence that I posted, I took ownership of my own emotions. So your response is not only redundant and dismissive, it's destructive to the thread itself. You cavalierly took the risk of hijacking Cranium's serious attempts at forum improvement. Your statement, had I responded in kind, would have caused the thread to degenerate into an argument about whether I do, in fact, insert random objects into my rectum in front of a camera crew. Then we'd have to discuss whether said behavior makes my input less valuable than yours.

This is why we don't allow name-calling in polite society. It's why we HAVE polite society. So we can collaborate and work as a team to get things done. Were we to let bullies at every table, we'd be faced with systemic collapse pretty quickly. Gee. I wonder if that's the core problem we have in our economy today? Just a thought.

If you wish to truly add something to this particular discussion, please try to see things from Cranium's point of view. He needs to drive eyeballs to his site. If he allows bullying behavior in all areas of the forum, he ends up with only bullies in them. Why have different forums, then? Why have a Green Zone? If his market is "only bullies need apply", then I defer to your arguments. But this site is, in fact, called Swollen Cranium. My assumption is that he's looking for intelligence, insight, and unique content from people who are not only bright but self-possessed enough to reflect on a topic and explore it from a kaleidoscope of points of view.

Were you able to do any of these things, you would find no need to attack me personally. You'd simply address my arguments and point out the holes in my logic. They're there. But I've yet to find anyone on this forum who can find them.

^you are simply not worth wasting anymore of my time on. Not that I won't......depends on the mood I'm in at the time.
All you do is whine like a little baby about being mistreated, while mistreating others in the same breath....Although I do admire your ability to change the facts to suit your needs and draw attention away from the reality of things. I gave you a chance to have a civil discussion and exchange of ideas, but you had to be an ass about it. Looks to me like all you want to do is to cry and criticize.
I really doubt Cranium needs you to speak for him.
And why in the fuck are you addressing me with Surg's quote. Get your players straight.

And please have a pleasant evening (or is that kind of talk too rough for you as well).

Your modesty is exceptionally refreshing.

To you that are logged in to the forum every day, to you few that are here with constant regularity.

No problem...

one of the few places a person can go to get the news uncensored.

Good god. I'm a sniveling whiny bitch. But I brazenly shove the odd object up my ass in front of a camera crew. And I'm arrogant. But I'm a crybaby. I have my facts all wrong. But nobody ever points out which ones.

Make. Up. Your. Minds.

May you come across a guy like me someday, and mistake a mild manner for weakness.

Yes. There is a way and I'm looking at redesigning the front page to accommodate it.
