Hi everyone
My ASUS laptop has started acting really weird. Instead of shutting down, it instantly restarts - ALL THE TIME.
The only time it actually powers off is if I hold the power button down (which I know is really bad for it)
Does anyone know what can be causing this?
Pleeeeeease?!

Good luck on that ..
I've got an over clocked desktop doing the same thing and I've spent about 12 hours on it so far trying to tweak voltage settings.

Windows Vista Home Premium.
I use Windows 7... and before that, I had XP... so I don't know anything about Vista.

Most laptops have a failsafe which will automatically shut themselves down when the processor gets too hot. If you've overclocked your processor, this is possible. OR if the inside of your laptop is dirty it will cause heating of the processor and other components. If you haven't overclocked your processor, I'd bet the inside of that box is covered in dust bunnies. Either way, it sounds heat-related. Take it apart and hit it with some canned air. Or if you're not comfortable doing that, take it to a pc shop and they'll do it for you, generally fairly cheap.
Windows Vista Home Premium.
In the past, I found this to be problematic.
Get 7 while you're at it.

Thanks for this.
Yeah, I think it is heat-related. The laptop actually gets hot when I'm typing, I can feel it through the touchpad at the front. Ugh. I guess I need to get some canned air.

Kill's definitely on with the heat theory. If it continues to overheat after using the compressed air, then have someone upgrade the cooling fan. I've built gaming machines for years, and a general rule is to always have more fans than needed on a spec sheet. Fans use little power for the problems they can help you avoid.

You know about these guys? They're placed directly under your laptop AND they plug-in directly to your laptop by USB.
My wife has one for the Apple MacBook. Not so noisy, works fine.

What Kommie said... they have laptop cooling pads. I have a laptop that is older then dirt and it gets hot as hell. I have never used one of these pads but I hear they work well.

A) 99% of commercially built computers don't have overclocking ability in the BIOS. If you want to overclock, you need a custom built PC with a non-HP/Compaq/Toshiba/Sony/Dell/etc. motherboard.
B) Laptop cooling pads work great. I have one for my laptop, which is several years old and still going great. It's also a good idea to use compressed/canned air to clean the air vents out every once in awhile, especially if you have pets (most common clogging things are dust and pet hair, from what I've seen). You don't need to disassemble it to blow out the main dust vents. In some cases, I've had to disassemble a laptop in order to completely clean out the CPU (processor) heat sink, but if you keep the outside vents cleaned out every once in awhile, it doesn't tend to build up inside as much.
C) Overclocking a Pentium II is gonna only get you so far, Cranium.
D) If you're going to keep your notebook for a few more years Mamba, I'd highly suggest upgrading to Windows 7. It's LOADS better than Vista. Vista was an epic fail on Microsoft's part. I got a beta of Vista, and within a week switched back to XP until 7 came out.
