I watched the fight last night between Tim Bradley (US) and Junior Witter (UK). I don't usually bother, but I was suffering from the WWWW's (world-wide-web-withdrawals) because my service provider was taking a nap, it seems.
Well! Thoroughly enjoyable 12 rounds of class fighting! The winner, Bradley, deserved to take the title after putting Witter on his arse during the sixth round.
:khi6i:
Don't get me wrong, it was close.... he won it by way of split-decision. But the fact that they were very well matched made it more enjoyable to watch, because it really could have gone either way. There was no element of "lets watch the underdog get his arse kicked just so the belt-holder can improve his stats" at all, which is so often the way in this sport. I was glad I watched this most entertaining bout.
But then, there are also (as with most sports) the dangers involved in getting repeatedly pummelled upside the head. Recall, if you will, the Chris Eubank/Michael Watson fight (1991) which resulted in Watson being upper-cutted into a coma. The bloke has never fully recovered. His speech is slurred, has difficulty walking, and can only "write simple notes".
Some say it should be banned. What do you think? And did anyone else here see last nights fight?

Ever heard of Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini?
3 people lost their lives because of a fight he was in with Duk Koo Kim.
An uppercut to the nose caused Kim to die 5 days after the fight because of brain injuries he sustained.
A few months later his mother and the ref of the fight committed suicide.
The WBC decided it would be a good idea to shorten the length of the fights to 12 rounds after this...in the name of safety.
As far as having it banned? Hell no. These guys are athletes and know what they're getting into.
Baseball players have died because of way ward hits. Football players have been paralyzed because of bad collisions...and that doesn't even scratch the surface of how some end up crippled after a few years of taking the punishment.
Hell, even gymnasts usually end up with bad knees from all the hard impacts of landing. And they're BABIES.
It's just the nature of the beast.

I agree. I'd even go so far as to say that our governments should not sanction high risk activities at all. For one, high risk activiies are the leading cause of stupid people dying.
Stupid people dying is a necessary part of evolution. Without it, the fittest have no survival advantage over the unfit, and our race damns itself to eventual decay.
But on a lighter note, boxing is a fantastic sport. Every time I see a good match like you just did, I wonder to myself about why I'm not more of a fan, and follow it. I couldn't tell you who the champ is right now without performing a google search.
Although I do admit that it would help me to get into it more if there were more white people in the sport, nowadays. If that makes me rascist, I guess I am, but the fact that it's so predominatly black does play a part. And I know that's unfair because I like hockey and THAT sport is nothing but white people.
I don't know...now I'm just rambling. Bottom line...Boxing is cool. Keep it. In fact, create more sports that end with large mutton heads getting the poop knocked out of them.

Best of both worlds:

Evolution stops the moment stupidity is no longer fatal.
Fact is, we are ok with war, but to guys wanting to hit eachother with rules is a no no, because it happens in our backyard. I think if someone wants to put his body on the line to make money, let him. If you think just because someoone dies we should stop it, then might as well close down the steel mills, mines, airports, taxi's, armed forces, and any job where there are casualty's.
predominantly black?
I guess its only the feather weight division full to the brim with chicanos, then, huh?
speaking of which...what weight were these guys fighting at? I like the little guys cause they're fast and can stay with it for 3 1/2 hours...
but I also like a good heavyweight bout when they aren't fat cows hoping for the glory shot...and standing still the rest of the time.
I also used to LOVE MMA fights...but when it's bloody and gruesome, I just don't have the spleen for it, anymore.
skilled fighting (particularly of the grappling and strategy variety)?
yes. love it.
banging away at each other's brains?
negative, captain.
