How could you cruel Americans starve an inmate like this?
30th April 2008 A lardy prisoner is suing jail chiefs after shedding more than seven stone in eight months behind bars.
Broderick Laswell claims prison grub is to blame for his dramatic weight loss.
He was almost 30 stone when he was held on a murder charge last September.
Laswell, 19, now claims inmates are “literally being starved to death”.
And despite still weighing in at a hefty 22 stone, he says his civil rights have been violated by jail chiefs.
The teenager claimed in his statement: “On several occasions I have started to do some exercising.
“And my vision went blurry and I felt like I was going to pass out.
“About an hour after each meal my stomach starts to hurt and growl. I feel hungry again.
If we are in a small pod all day (and) do next to nothing for physical exercise, we should not lose weight.”
The prison heavyweight complains about the size of cakes served up to him and the “occasional provision of two small cookies”.
He is also fed up with the size of the portion of crisps served up with his sandwich.
In his federal lawsuit Laswell also moans about the “drizzle of dressing” placed on his “small side of lettuce”.
Laswell is demanding hot meals are put on the menu at Benton County jail in Arkansas, USA, which only serves cold food.
Jail captain Hunter Petray said that meals provided for inmates average 3,000 calories a day.
Laswell was one of two people arrested last year for allegedly beating and stabbing a man to death.
