I guess you would if you were either:

1. quite stupid
or
2. quite lazy
or
3. lacking any kind of confidence to lie convincingly
or

I don't have this problem. I do my own calling in sick. Only cause I AM actually sick when I call in. And I get paranoid they think I'm lying, even if I'm really sick and close to death (or at least the flu)... which is quite ironic.
