And 'technically' only employers pay for unemployment insurance. Although with the federal extensions being added all the time one can argue that the Unemployment insurance is being boosted by the general fund.

Don't let ANYBODY shame you on this, although, you are a white man, a minority, going on unemployment, that is usually reserved for the lower sub-human species, never the less, don't let anybody get you down on what you have to do, keeping in mind that you are of a superior race and beyond the need of handouts, like some beggar in Mumbai, with your little brittle brown hand, stretching out for some cheap copper, instead of representing an American man of the 21st century from one of the greatest countries in the world where no white man would dare to steep so low as to file forms for what most would label as a free-ride on the back of your fellow tax payers who unlike you, are working hard day in and day out, breaking their back, going home to put the bacon on the table.

I've never said that unemployment insurance is a thing to be ashamed of ... I dunno what you are trying to get at with your comments.
The unemployment insurance program, when used within the RULES of the system are in fact a program for WORKING men and women. The rules state one must have had a JOB and must have lost that job through NO FAULT of their own to qualify for benefits.
Lately though .... dudes that are part of the 99 month program need a kick in the ass for using every damn dime the system has in the coffers ... effectively keeping the system at capacity for years. I know entire neighborhoods filled with shiftless motherfuckers that are using EVERY social program there is and rarely roll out of bed prior to 1300. The RULES say you MUST look for a job AND seek interviews to stay in the program .... <---- yeah right.

Yes. This ^^ !!
My husband was 'laid off' once they found out he was joining the Navy some months down the road. During that time period, he was on unemployment. First of all, let me just say that it sucks. Quite a few members of my family are deadbeats and sit on unemployment like it's a free ride (because, you know.. they worked hard at mcd's until they were 'laid off'), something that's owed to them without any sort of effort on their part.
My uncle just sits on unemployment because he got sick of working at Home Depot. His reason? People kept telling him what to do every day. So, he thought he'd pay his mortgage on his condo through unemployment and then use my groceries to feed himself. "Have you looked for a job yet, uncle?" "Yeah, I dropped an application off at this other hardware store.. but I didn't really fill it out, I just put my name and number so they can call me if they want to."
That was the SINGLE application he dropped anywhere while I was in Alaska.

I've never used the system. But its in plain black and white that a dude has to make two 'contacts' a week. ( in NC) they do not specify what that means.
And... it appears as if I never have to leave the house because I can file online. I can see how this would be an easy to abuse system.

True....but, at least in Michigan, you have to have worked for X amount of time to get Y amount of "credits" towards your unemployment.
I've come close to using that twice...both times I was about a day or so away from making the final call to the stupid automated line that would start the ball rolling when I managed to find work. They take the average you have made over the last 15 months and give you a percentage of that.
I'm rather happy that I haven't had to deal with the red tape involved with such things.

Well. ... no one that is using the system as it was designed for, to cover the time IN BETWEEN employment. But, the program has increasingly been characterized as a flat out free money program.

In my state its determined if the employer is chargeable for the unemployment affect his rates that he pays annually or if its out of the Employee Credits as you've stated. That determines if its 6 weeks or 12 weeks before you receive you benefits, the amount you get and the length of time.
When I can someone. . .I rarely get charged because they deserve it for being a pile of shit. I think its only happened once in the last 5 year and twice in the past 15 I've been managing people.

As its just me, the woman and the dogs ( see how I put the woman ahead of the dog? Yaa me !! ) The only social program we'll be participating in is the Unemployment Program.
We have a financial buffer but like most folks its not a buffer that can survive more than 6 months of being tapped before it starts to be a problem.

Unfortunately for me the area in which I live is saturated with former military types with my specific background and I suspect I will not be the only qualified dude up for this slot as this sweet deal only comes around once in a blue moon.
If I don't get the selection I will be upset sure .. but at least I'll know that a fully qualified dude took it from me because there is no way to bullshit this one.

IN NC, you have to had worked six months of the last quarter to qualify for unemployment, then that is based on your income. Before all of the extensions, you received x amount for 13 weeks, now you can be on it almost 2 years.
GDP, I never had to talk to anyone because I applied online, I did write down every job I applied for because they can demand you provide proof you are looking unless you are a student attending 20 hours of class a week, then you are exempt from looking. You can also go look now and see what they will pay you and how much you are able to make above that without your benefits being deducted.
I know this system all too well, twice laid off. Thankfully, I have been off it for a couple of years now.
Nothing wrong with military retirement at 39. Nothing like getting a check for breathing.

I always hate the fact that people look down on a perfectly good job when they need one. I worked fast food in high school. It wasn't that bad and my manager made good money and had I needed a new career it would be a serious consideration. My cousin works for McD's. He started on the fries and worked his way up. He's pulling in around $250,000 a year in the KC corporate offices. He get 6 weeks of vacation a year and a shit ton of benefits while traveling world wide at the company's expense.

Also your story is 100% not typical, --> dude works fry machine now swims in a money tub <--- reads real damn good and I have no doubt that it IS possible but it is also highly improbable.
Your average fry cook is not gonna develop ANY skill set other than "I did not melt my eye balls this week" and is therefore not gonna be able to use it for any great step on the cooperate ladder.
Still, it is a job and it pays real money .. but let us not kid our self into believing that people whistle on their way to yet another shift at McD.

These are the stories we love to tell ourselves. For some reason known only to Marilyn Monroe before she assumed room temperature, we all focus on the outliers and tell ourselves that we can ALL be "special" like that. Dunno .. I am actually thinking of going to our local Tech college and get a certification in Welding. ( Its a 37 credit hr course )
WELDING TECHNOLOGY — D50420
General Education Courses
ENG 110 Freshman Composition
PSY 118 Interpersonal Psychology
Major Courses
WLD 110 Cutting Processes
WLD 115 SMAW (Stick) Plate
WLD 116 SMAW (Stick) Plate/Pipe
WLD 121 GMAW (MIG) FCAW/Plate
WLD 131 GTAW (TIG) Plate
WLD 132 GTAW (TIG) Plate/Pipe
WLD 141 Symbols and Specifications
WLD 151 Fabrication I
WLD 261 Certification Practices
( Eng 110 and PSY 118 for a welding cert? what a croc! )
I've always wanted to have formal training in it and seems as if I may have time to do it now. Depends on the job listed in post #32. If I'm not selected I'll make a decision about school then.

That's not a typical job path because the typical employee is well. . . .lower class, undereducated, unmotivated, etc. However, giving you more credit than the average shit stain on the bun warmer, I'd have to think you'd move up. People with skills and intelligence don't stay in those positions so while my cousin's story is rare its because many people hired to cook the food are often barely capable of that job in itself.
I do agree that in your instance its stupid to work there because of the difference in compensation. My comment I guess. . . was more directed at the shit stain that has rarely held a job or that person who is out of assistance after losing a good job and they won't even consider it.

With stuff like the hot grease games, you are literally playing with someone else's future.
It was never that bad, just a little sting. Besides, an adult working the grill at McD really doesn't have a future. Besides, I was like 20.
BTW Cranium, it's not like I lost my job, but I found out today I had 32 hours of unused sick leave this year that goes to waste.
I really wish they would have told me that 32 hours ago.
Besides, an adult working the grill at McD really doesn't have a future. Besides, I was like 20.
Besides, it's OK for me to get my jollies at others' expense because I'm not them.

What?? I seriously want to bash your head against something spiky repeatedly. Over. And over. And over. A job is a job. Those people were not sitting around being saps of society, they were doing their best (most likely). I see kids and adults who work at fast food restaurants. It's a job. And almost always a step in the direction they actually want to go in. I suppose you'd have more respect for them if they sat on a street corner with a cardboard sign all day and drunk themselves into a stupor every night?
Because, yano. That's better than not having a future.

That is the dream indeed.
I've joked about that with my wife a few times and it only seems to piss her off.
I think no matter how wealthy your woman is or how low your monthly salary is, she would be very disappointed if her man didn't pull in a pay check.
May be something that goes back 3 million years. Ingrained in woman genes.
Back to McD, oh where to begin.
First off, if they weren't standing where I told them not to, 30 seconds before, they wouldn't get splattered. Or in reality, hit with a tiny drop of hot grease, that is rarely enough to make a blister. When I really wanted to mess with em over it, I'd just put them on fries, where they would get burned worse.
If I was really out to mess with their future, I would've just wrote them up, and/or sent them home, like I was supposed to. And that was something I didn't do, as opposed to people that would let the position go to their heads, and would toy with people's incomes & lives, over something as petty as having to tell them to go back to the grill more than once.
I understand it is different in other areas of the country, but working the grill for minimum wage at McD is hardly "trying their hardest."
As sad as it sounds, the people holding the signs make more money here.
And I didn't realize it til Pud's comment, but the store I'm thinking about is the first, and I think only time where I was the only Caucasian.
I did learn from the experience though, even though I admit I totally sucked at it. I still use one of their little sayings almost every day.
"the key to successful management is proper delegation."

seriously.. ? wtf.
It was in secret code.
It meant in my own warped opinion I think letting them get hit with a little bit of hot grease wasn't as bad as just telling them to hit the bricks. On the whole, they treated their employees like shit. I used to let everything slide, as long as someone didn't see me see them do it. You know, feeding their whole family for the price of a small order of fries, sending em to do a lot check, and then 20 minutes later seeing them playing video games at the liquor store on my way home. Some asst's let it go to their heads, and would get rid of people for the slightest thing to show their authority. I was the opposite. I still was somewhat of a dick, but when push came to shove, no, they wouldn't lose their pitiful job over it.

I wouldn't mind being the HouseHusband for a spell. I've always cleaned indoors since Elementary school, so that is nothing.
What I would like to do is find something on-line to make money like charting my mythical investments as my monetary contribution to the relationship.
The rest of the time would be going to cooking classes so I could have something professional prepared for her when she gets home, as well as a clean house.
Don't mind filling up the rest of the time with things I want to do like continuing Martial Arts classes, working out, walking the doggy, going to language classes.
Hell, I've been working since 6th grade and I'm tired. Now is the time to start spoiling myself with things I enjoy doing like upgrading ME.

I didn't read this as a complaint but a question of how people make it in 2011 on as little as $495 a week.
Living on $500 a week is a lot easier for some people then you may think, but going from $52k to $495 is a bitch. That is exactly what happened to me when I was laid off. I have made adjustments in my lifestyle and I make ends meet, which isn't optimal but I am working on that too.

Indeed.
I can see how it would be painful if one lived within a months budget of being behind on all bills or if one was perpetually spending 90 cents out of a dollar.
Collectively we Americans have been led to the credit well and its high time to get back to saving and buying with cash OR buying on credit with the intent of never going past the same calendar year with a charge.
I've done it when I was a troop, I lived a deficit spending lifestyle, hell MOST troops did and still do. But it took me 25 years to be in the finacial position i am in now .. it should have only taken 10 had I lived a 1/3 2/3 life style.
I also know folks that can live just dandy on $500/week.

I think a perfect job for Gary would be a cemetery lettering specialist. That's the guy who puts the final date of death on the stone when its already in place at the cemetery. I know I paid on of my guys last year $125,000+ and I have two other smaller ones that I use as well. Out here (in rural america) he comes through about 4 times a year March - Oct and will have several hundred dates to do at a time. He's on his own (good for Gary's anti social personality and the fact he's usually self motivated to do work on his own time). All it takes is a computer with a graphic lettering package, a stencil cutter, portable generator, air compressor and sandblasting tools and material. I would guess (minus the truck) a guy could have everything he'd need for under 25 gs and be pretty top of the line. You're on the coast and there are lettering schools in Georgia as well as a great one in Buffalo NY. And you'd have a population advantage my guy out here doesn't have. I would guess he could even get on with someone and learn a year or two before starting up his own company. I know if I ever get out of this gig its something I will seriously consider doing. We even had a guy who used to come through here all spring and summer and then head to AZ or CA and do it all winter. That guy made serious coin.

Approaching eight months unemployed.
According to the "talking heads" of media I am unlikely to ever find a job as time drifts onward.
Sure much of this 8 months I have only looked at and applied for jobs that were a fit for my personality, patience level, current skill set and future desires. The previous standards are a short list, very short.
So dwindling buffer zone savings .. and the fact that I can't spend money on toys is cramping my style, I needs a job yo!
Aside from money I'm getting lazy. There are times that I do not know what day of the week it is, nor do I care! I also am getting far too comfortable with being a self imposed shut in, I've not HAD to leave the house since December 2010. Hating the civilian world and its trappings like I do and having a choice not to interact with it has inevitably led me to a deeper feeling of comfort at my own seclusion, I can only imagine that time will add irreparable damage to my ability to interact with humanity in a favorable, socially acceptable manner.
^ That's all well and good, and were I a loner I would actually prefer to be in a one room shack on the back side of a mountain range somewhere ( with WIFI of course!!). But alas .. my sane lady friend is a social animal.
Anyway ... I may have to 'adjust fire' on my employment standards.
Sigh ...
SittinGrumpy

'adjust fire' on my employment standards.
Unfortunately that is what I have done. I have been working in a job that is NO where near what I went to school for nor what I ever wanted to do, but it pays the bills with a little help from school money. It has allowed me to stay employed and I have been able to job hunt for the job I really want and be picky about it.
I stopped looking for a job when I was waiting to find out about back surgery but since I found out they are putting that off I have been looking and have had two interviews. You seemed to hate your last job but if i remember your bragging, you made good money. Maybe look for something that will enable you to uncramp your style (LOL) while continuing to look for jobs that you want to do.

The conundrum of employment is such that an employer seems to not want to hire the unemployed and would prefer to employ the employed.
Add that to the fact that an employer can now get a PHD or a Masters degree holder to do the work of a former 4 year degree worker for the money that was normally paid to a 2 year degree dude and we have what I like to call a "soup sammitch".

Just got a "tentative offer" for a job @ Seymour Johnson AFB (http://www.seymourjohnson.af.mil/). As a member of their Security Force unit.
PRO:
1. It gets my Security Clearance reactivated. ( <---that is a BIG deal !! )
2. It breaks the cycle of No. ( <--- Another big deal.)
3. It puts my foot in the door of the government sector job.
CON.
1. Was not my first choice.
2. Its a 90 plus mile daily trip.
Just sent my 'accept offer' email. Will see where it goes from here, there is still the chance the job can go away or I can not be further processed for a myriad of reasons.

I start 'in processing' on Tuesday for the security forces work @ Seymour Johnson AFB. I'll have to go through several phases of in processing before I'm an official Air Force employee but I don't see anything on the radar that would make me not able to be finalized as a new hire on or about October 11.

It is true that it is NOT the job I had in mind, I wanted very badly to be part of the swift response team, a SWAT compatible unit, on another military installation but that job never fully materialized ( budget issues canceled the selection).
This job WILL lead to getting me back in the mix and gets my security clearance reactivated so I can't really complain I suppose. I guess its the curse of not really being in a position where I HAVE to take a job to survive financially.
But I HATE being unemployed, the freedom of doing nothing became a crushing responsibility in its own right.

Telephone interview just now, it lasted exactly 92 seconds.

I had applied for an internship last summer, which payed $10 an hour. I was told that I was unqualified for this position. While normally this may be acceptable, the job was an internship in a field where the average starting salary is ~60k. Something seem a little off? I qualify for the 60k version of the job, but not the $10 an hour job? And yes, the internship was with a megacompany.

It's a short term thing, but it sounds interesting and I'm thinking I'd like to be part of the project, even in a small way.

Anyway, I'm going in with out a hair cut, and with my old man beard. I'm not looking to make a career of this but I'm fairly interested in how they thought my resume was a close enough match to contact me directly about this job and I intend to ask just that.

Helping build the devices and systems that contain the process to create SynGas Cleaning (http://www.southernresearch.com/environment-energy/thermochemical-conversion/syngas-cleaning) and such.
Also since these items are only in the pilot-plant scale the needed adjustments and tweaks to the various chemical processes have to be manually adjusted rather than computer adjust from a control booth. In this case the tech has to locate the various pumps and valves by following the P&ID (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piping_and_instrumentation_diagram) for that system.
Additional duties include testing, repairing, and modifying mechanical and electrical parts used on chemical equipment, measure pressure, flow, temperature, level, and testing of other electronic equipment, assist in writing test procedures used for testing equipment, etc.

Going to take a "test" today. Some sort of non-management job I applied for ages ago at a Caterpillar assembly plant that is only 15 miles from my house. Not at all my first choice, as assembly line monotony is most assuredly going to piss me off at some point. I really don't much remember applying for it to tell ya the truth and must have been one of those days that I filled out 10 or so apps at once.
Also, I've got an eligible and a "most qualified" response from a state agency that I'm particularly interested in, I applied for it 35 days ago and yesterday there was an update to the application process. I've decided not to mention the agency nor describe the job duties, as this forum and its content could interfere with upward mobility at some point. I'm relatively sure this job will satisfy many of my requirements I've been missing since my time in the Army, well if the Title and duties section of the job posting are to be believed.
So if it comes down to me working one day for Caterpillar then getting a call for the State job I'll simply finish the day @ Cat and that will be that.
