She got into some shit I couldn't handle, though, and we lost touch until not too long ago. Chit chatting and catching up ensued. I realized that she is a stronger version of the girl I liked way back when. Of course, with the rough life she's led, she would either have to learn to be strong or die.

Bah.....I didn't nearly propose, I did propose. But she said she wanted a better proposal than the one I gave her...ring and all (which I did not have, obviously, being a spur of the moment thing).

Thing is, I'm the stubborn type. I'd be hanging on to every last shred of hope to make it work, even in the face of shit fallin down around my ears.

Also, she has 3 kids who are apparently VERY protective of mom. They just about literally chased her last beau out of the house. Not worried about that, though. Kids usually tend to use me as a jungle gym and try to climb me.

a while ago I posted a thread (http://swollencranium.com/forums/showthread.php?2722-My-pupper-doodles) about two pups that wandered up and adopted me.
I've grown to love these dogs immensely. They're , despite my relative ignorance in dog training other than loving, two of the best dogs I've ever owned. They're sweet. They don;t bark to hear themselves bark. They come when called and follow me around the yard like I'm the pied piper.

A few days ago Cleo just stopped eating. I wasn't aware at first because I don't hang around and watch them eat but I did notice there was food left over. Didn't think much about it the first day. Got to scratching my head and really watching on the second.
She didn't eat any at breakfast..nor at lunch. She wasn't her jovial self and seemed lethargic.
On the 3rd day, I noticed she hadn't moved much at all, still hadn't eaten and was now drooling...FUCK THIS...off to the vet we went.
Hours of sitting there waiting, nervous as hell over my little pupper doodle had me a bit on edge. Her day didn't go much better. The second time they stuck a rod up her ass for a stool sample, my sweeter than honey and always in a good mood embodiment of of grace and good will...let the vet's assistant know, in no uncertain terms, there wouldn't be a 3rd time.

More waiting. Vet comes in and squats <<====never a good sign.

"You're dog has Parvo" he tells me. "It's a virus and there is no cure"

The rest was a blur..thoughts I don't care to relive..
Some where in there were questions about Zeus..
In a haze of worry, I tell him Zeus is fine.
Still eating? Yes.
Still drinking water? Yes.
Lethargic at all? No.

I leave Cleo in their care with fluid IV's and meds being administered.


2 days later I get her home..She's JUST started eating again..tiny amounts. Maybe half a handful of dry food.
This is all good news. RECOVERY!!!
I'm so elated.
As I was staining the last of the deck today, I look over the edge. Zeus has his back arched and is hurling in a manner that brings back memories of my teens.

FUCK!!!

Off to the vet..rods up ass...he cares less than Cleo did...he's worse off than she was.
And his hit during the day.
He'd been disappointed with me only a few hours earlier because I was too busy to toss the stick he'd brought me.

So now I'm sittin here, with an e-beer in my hand, my boy at the Vet in far worse condition and my girl, slowly, on the mend.
I think.

My exhusband went through something like this with our dog Buster, but he was 13 years old, a boxer, and it was his time to go, he just stopped eating, moving, everything. He only lasted a week or two, but we went through hell with him, I know your babies will get better! Keep in good spirits hun! We're here for you!

How old were the pups when you got / found them? You should ideally, have had them innoculated anyway, regardless of their age, except if they could have been too youngat the time.

I fed some of my pups which had the same a mix of a little beef extract / beef spread and sugar water with a syringe, little by little, but constantly.
Seems to help a bit.
Parvo makes them dehydrate, which you can see by pinching their skin, the skin should go back to its original state immediately, if it keeps the shape of the area you pinched, or takes a while to go back to its normal state, teh doggeh is severly dehydrated. Bit of added sugar and minerals / vitamins in the beef spread can only do good.

Anyhoo, not nice to hear and good luck with them yappers, Parvo can be a real bitch.

I tried giving Cleo pureed food via syringe when she was ill..not good. She hurled within 5 minutes. Even with amounts as small 10cc's. Her stomach just wanted nothing to do with it.
I did give her water, starting at 10 cc's per hour, as the Vet said.
I soon found that she'd drink on her own..but I had to control the amount. Too much and she couldn't keep it down.
As for the age and inoculations.
My best GUESS (that's with the owner of the mother giving input) was about 8 weeks when they wandered up.
I gave them their Parvo shots at about 12 weeks..about 3 months ago.
Don't really understand how/why they both still caught it.

My best guess is that it's similar to why people still get the flu after getting a flu shot. Different strains of the virus, some of which are affected by the inoculation, some of which are not. And, unfortunately, your pooches managed to catch one that is not.

Their eating habits are back to normal, they've put on 10 pounds and have kicked parvo's ass.
