I've added a YIM clone chat room / Instant messenger.

Click the link in the nav bar and give it a try.

The version currently loaded is the FREE version. This means that almost ALL of the bells and whistles are deactivated.

I'd like you guys to tell me if you like this one better than the old one. If so I'll buy the PRO PLUS model.

Look HERE (http://www.addonchat.com/features.html) for a list of the things that are possible with the Pro plus edition.

Why do you pay for that stuff? Any Pay-pall button I missed and will continue to miss even after I'm directed towards it?

I buy stuff because :

a) Generally speaking FREE stuff either means an inferior product or a product with nearly non existent features OR a product that is saturated with vendor advertisements.

b) I want to use the stuff too .. and I want a thing that works, works well and works consistently. Free just does NOT usually meet those criteria.

Z) I am financially comfortable and consider this forum and its associated upkeep a HOBBY. I can afford it. I imagine a golfer says the same thing or any other person with a not for FREE hobby.

Paypal donations...

Yep I did have one and will add it back. Many members here have donated. I do not require a donation .. never will.

I mostly add the link because I would donate to a place i like or for a service I use and I know there are folks here that feel the same way.

The donation area is currently disabled.

Well since this forum has a whopping 12 regular members these days I would have to agree that it is indeed boring.

As I said in my opening post it is a FREE, feature reduced version. The pro version has the ability to store and archive just like YIM.

Also ...

You people that keep logging in, then leaving need to realize that you will see NONE of the things that were typed before YOU arrived.

Heloooooooooooooo FREE version.

Also note ...

The chat room is a JAVA app .. if you can't access it or are getting logged out unexpectedly try doing a JAVA update.

Or not ..whatever ..

Heh. No one in there right now, but I like it. The shoutbox stays on the front page and if you say something to someone and then see a shiny object, they think you're ignoring them. This thing is a separate, smaller window. Much more convenient.

That, and I like the sexy 'welcome' :D

...bitch doesn't read MY text out loud though. ghey.

Anyway ..

I like the Java version because:

1. Uses no system resources and is hosted externally.

2. Even if the forum is down for maintenance / errors the chat room can still be used via direct link.

3. Can be launched in a pop out window and has sound and New message alerts to let you know that folks are talking. This way one can navigate the forum and still monitor a conversation via the chat with out having to constantly navigate to the home page. ( yeah I know this is not such a big deal at this time because we only have a few regularly posting members..... )

4. Private chat channels. Private messages ... i.e. Yim clone.

But :

I also liked the one we had on the old forum. It was feature rich as well, but it was a bitch to manipulate and was temperamental at times.

I payed for the old one, and have donated to the developer of the old version on more than a few occasions. So either way we will be using a NOT for FREE product.

Either way is fine with me .. ..

I don't hate it. My only question is, will these lazy fuckers click the link or ignore it cause it's not in their face.

I need to do some reading on its tech specs but there might be a way to have it auto open a window like yahoo does when a message is received .. dunno yet.

Just an FYI. Went to "Who's Online" clicked enter chat room under someones name.... opens chat in the main window and not as a pop up.

Yep !

That's accepted behavior. ( mainly because I do not know how to prevent it yet )

I've decided to NOT use this.

It has great potential, but I will hold off going to a dedicated Chat program until the forum memberbase is much larger.

IF and WHEN the forum has a few HUNDRED regular POSTING members I will add it as a perk for certain user groups.

Anyway ..

When the old style shout box gets recoded I will install it.

I assure you that it would be a very useful and enjoyable product under different circumstances.

With only 10 to 20 of us here at a time it makes little sense to have. 50? 100? Then, in my opinion it would make a better addition to the forum.
