So ... its almost time, the newest in the line of Vbulletin products.

This thing has been hyped as the 'sliced bread' of forums.

I am eager to get into its guts and see what the hoopla is about.

I will be pre-ordering today .. and will install ( on a test platform ) as soon as it arrives for distribution.

When I am confident that I can integrate all current forum activity to the new version I will go live on Vb4.

As I stated before ... almost ALL code tweaks and bells and whistles I have added over the last 13 months will cease to work because of differing code.

I'll update this as events develop.

CrAnIuM
10-14-2009, 08:40 PM
DO NOT :

Make any more blogs.

Make any more Articles.

Make any changes to your user profiles.

These items will likely NOT carry over into the new forum.

I will do what I can, I will save everything as it is here and manually move things over if possible.

Do:

Continue to post in the normal manner as the basic database WILL transfer over with little to no issues.

Yeah .. ya can't make omelets with out cracking some eggs .....

Not to be an asshole or anything (me? neva), but I fail to see the necessity for such an expense. Like you said, the current tweaks will be lost in the upgrade. It's not as if this place is paying for itself, either. There are a myriad of sites running antiquated versions of Vb without major issues. I know you're well aware of the plentiful hacks available to patch the holes.

We all appreciate your zeal as Admin. It just makes me wonder what functionality you're thinking we're currently lacking that would help augment the lack of activity. It's like getting the cart before the horse.

Gained ? .....I'm not sure that there will be a substantive gain at all, not if you mean financial.

This forum runs on Vbulletin software, and like any software there will always be updates and evolving methods to populate data. I choose to venture into the new rather than rest with the tried and true.

If this forum had hundreds of regular members, posting hundreds of time per day I WOULD be reluctant to alter this place in any major way.

I'm not setting any carts before any horses ... what I am doing is simply looking for that place where I can let the forum linger for a long while. As it is the 3.XX series has reached its end with me, I've grown tired of it. I've been a part of the 3 series for 6 years ...2 as user, 2 as a Mod and now almost 2 as owner. There have been nice advances in usability in that time but essentially the platform is the same in most places.

Money ... I can absorb the expense easily, when have I said or appeared to present myself as needing to make a buck off this forum ?

The experiment with the advertisements some months ago was to see if I COULD generate a revenue in order to completely fund the monthly raffles WITHOUT user provided funding or paying out of my own pocket.

Hell .. even the logo design on the store items will be an @ cost venture.

As for the modules and add on products ... There are HUNDREDS of VB designers and coders that have nothing better to do than show off their big egg head. While it IS true that none of the current mods will work on VB4 it was also true that almost none worked when I upgraded from 3.6 to 3.7 ..and 8. With in DAYS the coders had spawned and released new mods that were compatible. I am confident that it will be the same with the 4 series ... also .. with 4 I am able to more effectively use my modest CSS skills and start designing my own stuff.

Anyway .... .. are you still using Windows 3.1 ... or Win98 ... or Xp .... ??

Your comments are valid but will not effect my decision to go ahead with the purchase and installation.

Update:

Starting Next week, and continuing until complete, I will be reverting the forum to its basic out of the box format.

All add on and doo dads will be removed. I will keep the chat box until the very last day before I start my upgrades BUT the chatbox will go away at some point and will not return until it is recoded to work on the new format.

STFU.

Out of the box format entailing what exactly? And what are the add-ons that you are removing? If I may be so bold as to ask, of course.

As in very basic functionality.

Also, I've made dozens of mods to the forum over the last 14 months, too many to list.

Vb4 (beta) has been released !!

So, starting Tomorrow, 14 Nov 2009, I will be operating VB4 in a test environment.

Due to legal issues I can NOT allow public access to my test board because I only own ONE license.

However, I will allow the Staff to check VB4 out and get a preview of its changes so that they may be better at answering questions posed by the general membership.

VB4 change over on the main forum is still estimated to happen at some point prior to 2010.

I'm so excited about the new code that I think I just peed a little ....

Yeah, Because things are a bit more intuitive AND with the New publishing tool I will be able to be a bit more creative with things.

I plan on having a firm grasp of things before I go live with it, even if everything Is fixed.

Dear Gary XXXXXXXX,

If you haven’t yet heard, the vBulletin team plans to release the vBulletin 4.0 Forums and vBulletin 4.0 Publishing Suite Gold Release on or before Monday, December 21, 2009.

Starting on the date of the Gold release, vBulletin 4.0 Forums and Publishing Suite will become officially supported products. This means that vBulletin 4.0 will be eligible for both ticket support and phone support.

As we work toward the Gold release, our goal is to get the best possible product into the hands of our customers. To do this, we’ve made huge investments in development resources and have been maintaining an extremely rigorous scrub schedule, identifying and fixing bugs at an unprecedented rate.

Since the release of the first vBulletin 4.0 public beta in mid-November, we’ve already released four additional public beta versions of vBulletin 4.0, including the latest release – vBulletin 4.0 Release Candidate 4 – last night. Additionally, we plan to provide an accelerated post-release maintenance schedule in January that will provide additional updates.

Please keep an eye on your e-mailbox over the next week for official word on the availability of vBulletin 4.0 Gold. We’re extremely excited about this huge milestone in vBulletin history, and thank you for your continued support along the way.

Holding pattern :

I have stuff to do, you know life stuff, and do not want to stat the forum upgrade until life stuff is "back on the plane".

So, all forum upgrades are on hold until 4 January 2010.
