Ok ... This forum has been alive for 9 moths worth of active posting. There have been over 80,000 unique visits to the forum in that time frame. ( or so says my server folks)


So .. maybe we need a new "thing" to get a motherfucker to sign up and post.

I am only me after all, and my ideas and how I see things as they should be are not exactly always "mainstream" and most assuredly not for the masses, therefore it leads one to assume that I may be the main cause here.

The name Swollen Cranium. It just sucks for pulling in membership--Let's be serious.
The layout. It is too damn sterile and not enough interesting shit to look at. I'm not suggesting putting so much flashy shit in here as to instigate an epileptic seizure, but it's like looking into an empty room with white walls..begging for furniture and a coat of paint. Know anyone in web design?
Current membership. The number of members that post regularly is small and isn't large enough to bring in masses of membership. For one thing it must seem like a clique, so who would want to be the guy nobody gives a damn about? For another, many people prefer a sense of anonymity when learning the ropes of a new forum--this is impossible here.
Continually discussing the death knells of this site can't possibly be a compelling reason for anyone to sign up.

You may get 1-2 legitimate sign-ups for every 50 links spammed. The rest will be reprisal dumping and/or other attacks. It doesn't seem to be a very efficient or effective way to bolster membership.

As much as I hate to admit it, people love Hot or Not type stuff. In my Stumbles, I've run across a ton of relatively popular Hot or Not type sites and Myspace/Facebook type sites. (I'm all for keeping the forums. In fact, with some new people chatting the joint up, I don't think it would be hard to get some of the regulars to start posting more again.)

A good arcade, while drawing some of your regular posters away from the board from time to time, can also score people who wouldn't normally come back to the joint for a second look.

Also, like Neggers said, the place is kinda sterile looking. Maybe a graphic in the background?

And whenever you want to spam some more, I'm all for setting the YouTube contest back into play. Perhaps something that incorporates using them for our profile videos? It could draw interest from the masses in what kind of profiles we have going on here a la Myspace/Facebook.

I've actually worked on a Facebook / myspace type environment. It was a technological headache, and on my test server it just looked ...juvenile.

I don't think you need to have payout for contests. I think you'd be just as well off rewarding winners with special privileges for a time period. Might be something like the ability to change someone else's avatar, fancy sig generation, etc.

I will need advertisement revenue and/or paid membership to make it viable in the long run.

Ad revenue first ... then a donation box ... then a pay per "thingie" ... and if that does not offset the considerable costs ( in comparison to what I pay monthly to keep this joint up) then I would HAVE to have paid membership. I'm into this forum for about $1300 US thus far.

The route I am thinking of taking is about $900 US just to start the thing ... then an additional $100 - 300 US MONTHLY to lease a dedicated server.

Server space ain't cheap my friends. And the thing I want to try CAN NOT be done via a shared server, much too resource intensive and no host that I know of will allow it on anything other than dedicated servers.

Only so much can be done with this forum software, I am NOT a professional coder / designer and do not have the knowledge to tweak all the essentials into a dazzling unique environment. 99% of every forum you see that runs Vbulletin is using reusable code and as flashy as their forum home might appear its not like they did anything special in the big picture.

Even though i happen to like the current skin I think you should make a few other skins for the forum so that people can choose whatever skin they feel most comfy with. I've noticed that people seem to really enjoy forums that have a lot of customizing going on.

Youtube videos would be great, once you spiffy up the place again I'll get one of my buddy's to make a video or two. But i need to be able to tell him what exactly the forum has to offer and stuff.

Speaking from my own experience, I have almost completely stopped posting on sites where my URL is know. It makes me feel dirty, like the Admin (who is more than likely a friend of mine) would rather I spam than buddy up to his members.
