I'm mainly familiar with it used in the context of someone floating an air biscuit. i.e.- walking into a room to discover a rancid stench, leading one to exclaim, "Jesus Christ! Which one of you motherfuckers busted ass in here? I hope you shit yourself."

Thank you all for your input. I can honestly say that before yesterday, I'd never heard it used to refer to gaseous emissions! I've heard it used both in regards to kicking ass and working hard... but farting?

I've always used it like if Im ice skating and fell, "OMG, I busted my ass on the ice." Once I was being stupid and kicking really high and fell on my butt, and my husband goes, "haha...you busted your ass!"
